{"id":10985,"date":"2022-02-09T14:00:55","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T13:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1581604"},"modified":"2022-02-09T14:48:20","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T13:48:20","slug":"magpie-murders-teaser-sees-lesley-manville-play-hardball","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/magpie-murders-teaser-sees-lesley-manville-play-hardball\/","title":{"rendered":"Magpie Murders teaser sees Lesley Manville play hardball"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Patrick Cremona\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 09 February 2022 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>BritBox\u2019s latest original drama The Magpie Murders lands on the streamer tomorrow \u2013 and <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/&quot;\">RadioTimes.com<\/a> can now exclusively reveal a new first-look clip from the show.<\/p>\n<p>The teaser shows Lesley Manville\u2019s character \u2013 a literary editor named Susan Ryeland \u2013 playing hardball with German publisher Klaus Eckerman (James Flynn) over the rights to a new manuscript by best-selling mystery writer Alan Conway (Conleth Hill).<\/p>\n<p>It opens as she hurriedly puts on her shoes on an escalator before meeting Klaus, who asks her if she\u2019s considered his offer.<\/p>\n<p>She responds that it\u2019s not enough, and when he claims that he doesn\u2019t agree, she retorts: \u201cWell, you wouldn\u2019t, would you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome on, Susan, we\u2019re old friends, we don\u2019t need to haggle,\u201d says Klaus, to which she replies: \u201cOh, I thought that\u2019s what I was here for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then laughs before she adds: \u201c18 million copies sold worldwide, two and a half million in this territory, 35 languages and a TV series on the way.\u201d<\/p> <p>After a brief discussion about another publishing house, Klaus says: \u201cWe can go to \u20ac75,000\u201d \u2013 but this offer doesn\u2019t appear to sway Susan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, we won\u2019t go below 100,\u201d she says, and when Klaus says that the figure is too high, she points out that \u201che has a new book\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This book is revealed to be the titular Magpie Murders, and when Klaus asks Susan if she\u2019s read it, she answers: \u201cHe hasn\u2019t delivered it yet, but it will be number one like the last one and the one before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Towards the end of the clip, Klaus says that he can give her an answer this evening and asks: \u201cHow about a drink at your hotel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This prompts Susan to point out: \u201cYou\u2019re not the only interested party Klaus\u2026\u201d to which he replies: \u201cHmm.
