\u201cThis is observational, and we\u2019re interested in the natural behaviour and all the animals featured are wild. There\u2019s no captive animals here, only if they\u2019re being moved from A to B or the scientists are putting a collar on them so that we can better understand them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think expos\u00e9s like Tiger King are important, because obviously there are large numbers of these animals in captivity and their welfare is of prime concern. But equally, you could make the case that their wild counterparts, where they\u2019re playing a vital ecological role \u2013 they\u2019re killing prey, they\u2019re chasing prey, they\u2019re shaping the landscape and so on and so forth \u2013 that\u2019s where they really ought to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/div>While Packham understands the demand for other styles of documentaries, he believes it\u2019s important to show big cats in their natural habitat.<\/p>\n
He continued: \u201cWe\u2019d all much rather that they were out in the wild. They\u2019re meant to be in the wild and it\u2019s there they\u2019re meant to be doing what they\u2019ve got to do, which is basically helping maintain those ecosystems so that they\u2019re functional, stable, sustainable, and so that their ecosystems can support us and our future as well.\u201d<\/p>
Although \u201centertaining\u201d, Packham argued that some of the more viral documentaries can be \u201cexploitative\u201d, which is something he steers away from.<\/p>\n
Speaking of the two documentaries he narrated for National Geographic, he explained: \u201cOf course, they\u2019re interesting, but in terms of them being entertaining, I wouldn\u2019t say they\u2019re not entertaining, but they\u2019re not exploitative. And I think things like Tiger King are exploitative, in that sense.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re exposing a man in that case, or I should say a collection of people, who were exploiting animals for personal gain. We\u2019re observing animals to better understand them so that we can better protect them, and that\u2019s critical.\u201d<\/p>\n
