Russell T Davies has opened up about his shock decision to return as Doctor Who showrunner.<\/p>\n
The acclaimed screenwriter recently topped 2021\u2019s RadioTimes.com TV 100<\/a>, recognising his incredible year that included the launch of powerful AIDS drama It\u2019s A Sin<\/a> on Channel 4.<\/p>\n For many years after leaving Doctor Who<\/a>, Davies\u00a0insisted that he would not return for a second stint on the long-running sci-fi drama, but it now appears the show was never far from his mind.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cThe truth of it is, everyone lies when they leave Doctor Who and says \u2018Oh, I\u2019ve moved on! \u2013 I\u2019ve been thinking about it since I was three, so there\u2019s no way you stop thinking about it.\u201d<\/p> Jodie Whittaker\u2019s Thirteenth Doctor will be regenerating later this year, ushering in a new era for Davies, who will work alongside another lead actor whose identity is yet to be revealed<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are things coming up that are brand new ways of telling stories that have never been done before, so it just feels new \u2013 I wouldn\u2019t have gone back if it wasn\u2019t feeling new,\u201d Davies teased.<\/p>\n He went on to elaborate on why Doctor Who has a unique appeal to writers that few other shows can claim to have, as each week brings its own distinct premise and cast of characters.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m sitting here now, 10 pages away from a climax thinking, \u2018God, I\u2019ve never been in this territory before \u2013 this is strange and new and hopefully I\u2019ll learn something out of it,\u201d added Davies.<\/p>\n \u201cThe reason why I\u2019ve worked on 34 programmes in my life is that I don\u2019t normally like continuing series. That\u2019s why It\u2019s A Sin came to an end and I just moved on.\u201d<\/p>\n He concluded: \u201cI just like looking at a new set of challenges every time and another blank page, but Doctor Who is always a blank page.\u201d<\/p>
