Tonight (22nd February) sees the debut of new ITV documentary Kate Garraway: Caring for Derek, which follows the Good Morning Britain presenter as she welcomes her husband back to their home after 374 days in hospital with long COVID.<\/p>\n
In one of the programme\u2019s most poignant moments, Derek hugs his son Billy \u2013 the very first time he was able to use his arms to outstretch to someone or something since his illness started.<\/p>\n
Speaking about the moment on today\u2019s edition of Good Morning Britain, Kate explained: \u201cI didn\u2019t see this until I watched the footage, but it\u2019s the first moment Derek moves his arm. It makes me cry now.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is the first moment we\u2019ve seen him be able to activate a movement prompted by emotion, not just someone asking if he can move his hand to the left or to the right.\u201d<\/p>
In tonight\u2019s Caring for Derek, Billy can be seen talking about his father\u2019s return home.<\/p>\n
Asked if he has any worries, Billy responds: \u201cYeah, I don\u2019t really mind. Well, I obviously mind but I\u2019m not really nervous or anything, \u2018cos I can finally complete the Death Star.\u201d<\/p>\n
At this point, he points out a LEGO set of the Death Star and continues: \u201cI\u2019ve been waiting to complete this until Dad gets home.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a further clip, which can be seen below, sees Kate opening up about Derek\u2019s return.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is our laundry,\u201d she says. \u201cAll of this and all of this bag is Derek\u2019s washing today. The bedding is vast, it\u2019s a vast amount of things to do, so I just constantly ship it through. And it\u2019s fine, I. think it\u2019s just a symbol really of how everything is scaled up by 100.\u201d<\/p>
