Cox was originally attached to another project and so wouldn\u2019t have been able to be a part of the series, which his wife \u2013 TV producer Samantha Thomas \u2013 was already involved with.<\/p>\n
\u201cI read it because my wife was producing it and she asked me what I thought \u2013 I was committed to something else,\u201d Cox explained to RadioTimes.com<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI read this and it made me feel a bit s**t about the other thing I was supposed to be doing! Thankfully, that thing fell apart and I then said to my wife, \u2018Do you think that they would have me?\u2019 \u2013 so I got on a phone call with the creator and it was a pretty easy thing.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt was great, because obviously it meant that both her and I got to work on something that we\u2019re really passionate about and loved, but also meant that during a pandemic we got to stay together as a family and go to Ireland and not be separated.\u201d<\/span><\/p> Set in Dublin, crime drama Kin is written by series co-creator Peter McKenna and also stars Irish actress Clare Dunne as Amanda Kinsella, wife to Michael\u2019s brother Jimmy (Emmett J Scanlan) who becomes embroiled in a gangland war after a family tragedy.<\/p>\n \u201cI remember feeling, for the first time in a few years, that I had read a script where I just got completely taken away to some other place,\u201d said Dunne. \u201c<\/span>I don\u2019t really remember stopping reading, genuinely. I feel like Peter is in this zone as a writer now where he\u2019s confident, he\u2019s assured. He knows that on the page sometimes there\u2019s actually a small amount of words, but they say a lot. And I think that\u2019s the mark of true confidence on the page.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Though the events of the series are fictional, Cox added: \u201cWhen I accepted the job, I didn\u2019t quite realise the extent to which there is this kind of activity in Ireland, and it can be quite frightening. Our show is not based on any real-life family or real events, but of course there are going to be parallels drawn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The opening episodes of the series follow Cox\u2019s character as he emerges from a stint in prison and struggles not to be drawn back into a criminal lifestyle, a journey which parallels that of Dunne\u2019s Amanda. \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be tricky for him,\u201d said Cox. \u201cThis family, they\u2019re spending their whole time trying to stay out of prison. But they are prisoners already \u2013 prisoners of their own making, by the lifestyles they\u2019ve chosen to live\u2026 or in some cases have been forced into, I guess there is a distinction there.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhen we meet Michael, he\u2019s got one thing in mind and that is spending time with his daughter, and how long he can survive on the periphery of this family is going to be a question that\u2019s asked throughout throughout the whole first season.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n On top of exterior pressures, long-hidden secrets also begin to emerge across the eight episodes that threaten to tear the family apart from the inside \u2013 with Cox and Dunne both having conversations with writer McKenna about their characters\u2019 backstories before filming began.<\/p>\n \u201cI had a few conversations with Peter and obviously he\u2019d thought about some things and there\u2019s other details that maybe I\u2019ve then included or added to help me,\u201d Cox explained. \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s about equipping yourself with enough, the right information that will help explain to you \u2013 and maybe therefore the audience \u2013 how you\u2019ve got to where you are, and why you make those kind of decisions that you make.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHe [McKenna] was kind of like\u2026 you know you\u2019re in the gym and you\u2019ve got a personal trainer and they sort of pump you up a bit?\u201d Dunne laughed. \u201cPeter was also pumping me up a bit about Amanda, telling me, \u2018This is one of the biggest roles that you\u2019ll have ever played so far in your career, because you\u2019ve never done TV before, and this is going to be a massive jump into the deep end.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBut in that conversation, he did tell me a bit about her past and where she comes from. At the same time, he said, \u2018I\u2019m really open for you to interpret or make some decisions or come to me with thoughts. As we approach the start of filming, during filming, just always talk to me.’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Prior to the shoot, the cast also spent time in rehearsals workshopping their characters\u2019 backstories, not all of which was uncovered in the first season of Kin. \u201cI still think there\u2019s probably more to be discovered on that, actually,\u201d said Dunne. \u201cIf you watch Ken, the past sort of sneaks into the story. And it\u2019s really intriguing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong> Charlie Cox confirms he will return as Daredevil again in MCU<\/a><\/p>\n Though Dunne and the majority of Kin\u2019s cast \u2013 including Scanlan, Aidan Gillen, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Ciar\u00e1n Hinds \u2013 were all born in Ireland, Cox had to adopt a Dublin accent to play Michael. \u201cIt\u2019s so much work!\u201d he said. I do accents all the time, I\u2019m always doing accents for some reason. But I have to work really, really hard \u2013 hours and hours of drilling sounds and working with an accent coach and listening to podcasts.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cFor me, a really, really truthful accent comes when you\u2019ve lived in it for a couple of months. And you\u2019ve kind of got to the next level of nuance and it\u2019s in your body, you know?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n According to Cox, his cast-mates were \u201cvery kind and very supportive\u201d, \u201cso they were either very good liars or they were genuinely very pleased with how it sounded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Kin was shot in late 2020 in Dublin, with Cox insisting the cast are all \u201cdesperate\u201d to reunite for a possible second season. \u201cWe\u2019re waiting to find out,\u201d he said of the show\u2019s future. \u201cI believe the signs are good. I believe there\u2019s good whisperings and there\u2019s a good chance we will go again this year. I have not had confirmation of that.
