<\/p>
Joe vs Carole star John Cameron Mitchell has revealed that he was \u201cencouraged not to\u201d speak to Joe Exotic<\/a> before portraying him in the upcoming comedy.<\/p>\n The actor, who stars alongside Kate McKinnon in NBC\u2019s dramatisation of the events documented by Netflix\u2019s Tiger King<\/a>, told RadioTimes.com<\/a> in an exclusive interview that he didn\u2019t want to reach out to Exotic after hearing his reaction to his casting.<\/p>\n When asked whether he wanted to speak to Joe Exotic before filming the Joe vs Carole<\/a>, Mitchell said: \u201cNo \u2013 I really didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n \u201cI mean, production encouraged not to. We also wanted to be impartial. We\u2019re not on Joe or Carole\u2019s side. And you know, he would demand to see the script. It would just be a nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n Mitchell added that when Exotic reacted to the show\u2019s casting on Twitter in July 2021, writing that Mitchell would make his looking like a \u201cflaming [redacted homophobic slur]<\/a>\u201c, it didn\u2019t make him want to reach out.<\/p> \u201cI think if he sees it\u2026I think he\u2019s actually going to be shocked at how humanised it\u2019s made him. He\u2019s a real person in this. In the docuseries, he\u2019s a cartoon of his own creation, but in this case, he\u2019s a real person with feelings and understandable feelings.<\/p>\n \u201cSo he can mock us as much as he wants and he can say, \u2018That\u2019s not how it happened!\u2019 But nothing is exactly how it happened unless you\u2019re shooting it on your iPhone,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe\u2019re an interpretation. I\u2019m not imitating him, I\u2019m doing an interpretation.<\/p>\n \u201cAll those events didn\u2019t happen exactly the way they happened but the feeling of that, the spirit of it, I believe was truthful.\u201d<\/p>\n Joe vs Carole premieres on Peacock, exclusively available on Sky and NOW in the UK on Friday 4th March.
