Channel 5 drama The Holiday<\/a> wrapped up in explosive style tonight (Friday 4th March), with the grisly truth laid bare for all to see. Warning<\/strong>: there are spoilers for the final episode from this point on.<\/p>\n

Izzy wasn\u2019t having an affair with Sean, as Kate had suspected \u2013 that \u201cglow\u201d that everyone kept mentioning was courtesy of a woman outside of their friendship group that Izzy had fallen in love with. On the contrary, it was Jenny who had been communicating with Sean under the pseudonym \u2018Coral Girl\u2019,\u00a0 but their secret conversations weren\u2019t rooted in lust, but tragedy.<\/p>\n

Sean had witnessed Jenny\u2019s son Jake intentionally drive into a teenage boy back home. She begged him not to report the incident to the police or to tell Kate, who is a detective. And to make matters more complicated, Sean and Kate\u2019s daughter Lucy was also in the car with Jake, but he hadn\u2019t clocked that at the time.<\/p>\n

Lucy had been romantically involved with the deceased, but their relationship crumbled when he filmed them without her knowledge during an intimate moment. When she discovered what he\u2019d done, Lucy was inconsolable and begged Jake to take action.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease! You\u2019ve got to help me,\u201d she said. \u201cI want him dead\u2026 You go round there and you f**king kill him.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s exactly what happened.<\/p>

Izzy, who knew the truth after Lucy had confided in her, found herself in an altercation with Jenny in which she implored Jake\u2019s mum to report what had happened. But Jenny refused, clawing at her as she pleaded with Izzy to keep shtum. A few seconds later, Izzy plummeted to her death.<\/p>\n

Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a> about Kate\u2019s emotional state when she realised that Izzy was totally innocent, Jill Halfpenny said: \u201cI think there\u2019s so many things [running through her mind]. One is pure guilt. She can\u2019t believe that she would have thought that about her friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut the other is that she\u2019s so angry. This could have all been explained if Sean had been honest with her from the beginning, before they even left for the holiday. She finds that very, very difficult to come to terms with.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt the heart of any good thriller there is bad communication. And if the writing is good enough, then everyone will have really good reasons. You can understand why Sean didn\u2019t want to give Kate that piece of information. He didn\u2019t know that that was going happen. He wasn\u2019t going to share it until the time was right, or hopefully never. Obviously, with hindsight, he\u2019s going to think every day of his life, \u2018I wish I\u2019d just told her\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut as human beings, we protect ourselves, I think, at all costs. And I think with Kate, a lot of her faults throughout the four hours are that she doesn\u2019t come forward with what she knows and how she\u2019s feeling. If she had cut to the chase earlier, she would have been able to avoid all of this, but she doesn\u2019t. She keeps pursuing because she doesn\u2019t trust people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Halfpenny went on to explain why Lucy felt unable to confide in her mother before the situation escalated: \u201cKate is very prideful. What she didn\u2019t realise was that because she\u2019s a very highly principled person, very ethical, and has a very binary sense of right and wrong, it can be very scary to come forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think she [Lucy] just thought, \u2018Where can I go with this?’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As the final credits rolled, there were a handful of strands left dangling. Would Kate feel able to continue working for the police given what she now knows?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a little visual at the end when she pulls off her badge,\u201d said Halfpenny. \u201cBut we\u2019ll never know. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had to call it now, then I think she probably wouldn\u2019t because in order to do the job, and in the way that she did it, she had to believe in what she was doing. And she had to live in the way that she was asking other people to live. And I think the type of person she is, she probably just thinks, \u2018I can no longer pursue that path because I\u2019m not that person. I\u2019m a hypocrite.\u2019 And I think that would kill her inside.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s also uncertain if the remaining friendships \u2013 if they can even be described as such following the harrowing events \u2013 will survive. \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s hard to come back from things like that,\u201d said Halfpenny. \u201cI\u2019m not sure whether they would stay friends. Being bonded by something like that, I think it\u2019s too uncomfortable for everyone. I think they\u2019d just separate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And Kate\u2019s marriage is also in tatters following Sean\u2019s betrayal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would hope [they\u2019d stay together],\u201d said Halfpenny. \u201cWhen you read those types of scenarios in real life and you see the destruction, and then the very last thing is that couple ends up splitting up, it always breaks my heart slightly. You\u2019ve lost everything, and now you\u2019re losing your best friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey both made mistakes, and maybe if they\u2019re sensible enough they can admit their mistakes and just keep moving forwards with each other because they do love each other. I would love to think that they do [last] because there\u2019s so much loss there. There\u2019s so much loss there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
