Derry Girls star Siobh\u00e1n McSweeney has teased that her character Sister Michael \u201cbecomes more herself\u201d in the comedy\u2019s third and final season, promising more serious storylines for her \u2013 while still delivering \u201csome of the best lines in the series\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, McSweeney said that the sarcastic nun, who is the headmistress at the girls\u2019 school the central characters attend, will be \u201cforced to confront her own issues\u201d and \u201cgrow up\u201d this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe hits a few challenges where she\u2019s forced to, just like the girls<\/span>, grow up herself,\u201d she teased. \u201cAnd she\u2019s forced to confront her own issues a little bit. And a bit like being mean, it\u2019s very easy to stay complacent.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very easy to stay cynical and sarcastic. It\u2019s a very passive thing. And there are a few things in this series that force her to stand up and actually take account of herself and of what she believes. So I think Sister Michael becomes more herself. It\u2019s really lovely.\u201d<\/p>\n

McSweeney, who has a starring role in upcoming ITV series Holding, also promised that her Derry Girls<\/a> character still delivers some of the most memorable one-liners this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cYet again, I have some of the best lines in the series. Structurally, it\u2019s a f**king gift. Everybody gets to work on setting up the gag, I come in, hit the punchline, and then leave again,\u201d she said.<\/p>

However, she found that returning to set to film the final season proved \u201cbittersweet\u201d due to both the filming restrictions imposed during the pandemic, and to an injury sustained to her leg before filming began.<\/p>\n

\u201c[It was] bittersweet,\u201d she said. \u201cEverybody who is in this, the show has changed their lives. There isn\u2019t a person who\u2019s sort of gone, \u2018Oh, yeah, my life is the same.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThe really sad thing about it is COVID made things incredibly difficult for any kind of closeness because we were all in our bubbles. Everybody had to be very careful. Also, because of my leg, I was in an awful lot of pain and was still on crutches.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a pity, but people had it worse. It was lovely to get back into the habit, and then immediately things start coming back. It\u2019s like riding a bike, except one you don\u2019t f**king fall off, Siobh\u00e1n,\u201d she joked.<\/p>\n
