ITV crime drama Holding begins this week, based on Graham Norton\u2019s bestselling book of the same name and starring Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones) as a shy police officer in over his head.<\/p>\n

The series also co-stars Derry Girls<\/a>\u2018 Siobhan McSweeney, Charlene McKenna, and Oscar-winner Brenda Fricker, and is set in the\u00a0remote Irish village of Duneen, where nothing much happens \u2013 that is, until human remains are unexpectedly discovered.<\/p>\n

But where was the ITV series filmed, and did it take place in County Cork, where Graham Norton\u2019s book is set?<\/p>\n

Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, Holding\u2019s Conleth Hill<\/a>\u00a0revealed that the majority of the series was filmed in \u00a0West Cork, Ireland, with most taking place in the likes of Skibbereen, Castletownshend, and Drimoleague.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe filmed in two different villages in West Cork,\u201d he said. \u201cThe main\u2026 shop and everything else, the bar \u2013 were all in Drimoleague. And then they \u2013 everything was on location. There\u2019s no studio, there was no things [made] specially\u2026 It was all in and around Skibbereen and all West Cork, we didn\u2019t travel very far.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI think that the landscape is definitely another character in it\u2026 The weird thing about West Cork is you\u2019ve got this cosmopolitan element, but you\u2019ve also this still very rural element. And so you have all these mixes that contradictions within that place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way they talk about it within the script, you know, he [PJ] says that people looked at a map and decided this [West Cork] was the safest place to live in the world from fallout from nuclear [war]. So there\u2019s an argument that it\u2019s a place that people go to hide as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking at a press event, series writer and executive producer Karen Cogan said:\u00a0\u201cIt was case of getting there as soon as possible and making sure we film there [in Cork].<\/p>\n

\u201cThe juxtaposition of dark and light is very typical [of] Ireland and especially Cork, there [are] so many contradictions to the place, it made us cement that tone of light and dark.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very inherently Irish and every new place we went to was exciting. It all lifted us up. Every place felt like a \u2018tick\u2019 that we were in the right physical place to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
