The trailers gave a quick glimpse of Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) being called in front of a shadowy council to explain why he opened the Multiverse, which most think is this mysterious group that has often appeared in Marvel comics.<\/span><\/p>\n But just who are these political puppet masters, and who will be joining their ranks in Multiverse of Madness?\u00a0<\/span><\/p> First introduced in 2005\u2019s New Avengers #7, the Illuminati was an over-powered group of minds that used their sway to turn events in their favour \u2013 and once blasted Hulk into space (whoops!). <\/span><\/p>\n The original members consisted of Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Mr Fantastic, Black Bolt, Namor the Sub-Mariner and Professor Xavier. <\/span><\/p>\n Of course, that particular line-up seems a little unlikely in the MCU given that most of these characters are dead or not currently cast in the MCU.<\/span><\/p>\n But we\u2019re pretty sure at least one of them has been confirmed thanks to THAT jaw-dropping appearance of Sir Patrick Stewart<\/a> in the trailer. <\/span><\/p>\n Much like Spider-Man: No Way Home added Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield\u2019s Spider-Man eras into MCU canon, Multiverse of Madness now looks poised to bring Fox\u2019s original trilogy of X-Men back with a bang (via Stewart).<\/span><\/p>\n Alongside that, it seems clear that Stewart\u2019s appearance could only signal the Illuminati\u2019s big-screen debut \u2013 but perhaps we shouldn\u2019t jump to conclusions. <\/span><\/p>\n In an interview with <\/span>Empire<\/span><\/a>, Producer Richie Palmer said: \u201cI\u2019ll quote the first X-Men movie and say, \u2018Are you sure you saw what you saw?\u2019 There are infinite versions of these characters, and just because you may have heard something familiar doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s someone you have seen before.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n In other words, this could be a variant of Professor X or another character entirely who just happens to be played by Stewart (remember Evan Peters in WandaVision?).<\/span><\/p>\n (Then again, let\u2019s remember Andrew Garfield repeatedly denied he\u2019d be back for No Way Home. It would be foolish for Palmer to spoil what could be one of the movie\u2019s biggest plot points.)<\/span><\/p>\n Anyway, assuming we are getting the Illuminati, let\u2019s run through which characters could be stepping up, and who could play them. <\/span><\/p>\n We don\u2019t imagine Anson Mount will be back from his Inhumans days to play Black Bolt, and given the show\u2019s reception, the character will presumably be swapped out for someone else. <\/span><\/p>\n In the trailer\u2019s Xavier scene, someone is seen carrying a sword on their back, which led to speculation <\/span>Mahershala Ali\u2019s Blade<\/span><\/a> will make his debut (or, potentially, the Wesley Snipes version). <\/span><\/p>\n In reality, it\u2019s most likely to be Chiwetel Ejiofor\u2019s Karl Mordo.
