As partner Marlon suffers a stroke in devastating scenes, Rhona becomes his carer. <\/p>
Rhona Goskirk\u00a0is about to have her world turned upside down when partner Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) suffers a stroke in next week\u2019s Emmerdale<\/a>.<\/p>\n The couple will seal their engagement in heartwarming scenes, before Marlon heads home and collapses while alone. He is found by daughter April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan), who calls an ambulance.<\/p>\n Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press about her new storyline, actor Zo\u00eb Henry reveals that Rhona feels \u201chelpless\u201d over Marlon\u2019s ordeal.<\/p>\n \u201cI think [her reaction is] helpless, actually,\u201d Henry says, referring to a moment where Marlon is unable to talk at the hospital and a distressed Rhona runs from the room. \u201cKnowing that she can\u2019t really do anything to make things any better. It\u2019s awful no matter who it is, seeing somebody struggling to manage, and that\u2019s exactly what she\u2019s seeing in that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n Rhona will quickly take on the role of Marlon\u2019s carer, as the right side of his body is affected by the stroke. Marlon will also suffer from Aphasia, losing his speech as he struggles to communicate. Emmerdale is liaising with the Stroke Association<\/a>, who has been instrumental in helping the ITV soap tell this story.<\/p>\n Discussing how her alter ego feels about the situation, the actor says Rhona battles with her doubts. \u201cI think she wrestles with \u2018can I do this? Am I up to this, do I want<\/em> to do this?\u2019 which is quite a guilty thing for her to admit.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s a lot to think about, there\u2019s the fact that she\u2019s had to adapt her home, to effectively turn it into a hospital ward for a time, with all the stuff that Marlon needs to be existing at home and not in a hospital any more. But also trying to run her business still \u2013 and be a mother, and [Rhona\u2019s] own mother has arrived as well, so there\u2019s a lot going on there.\u201d<\/p> Henry adds that while she isn\u2019t sure what the future holds, Rhona should be entitled to further support in order to help Marlon. But as it stands, she is pushing herself to do it all. \u201cCurrently she\u2019s battling it on her own and trying to do everything and be 50 people at once which is an impossibility.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s new ground, and every day brings a new challenge and a new hurdle, she\u2019s just trying to keep her head above water. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to be easy for her at all. Whether she manages to stick at it is anyone\u2019s guess. And you don\u2019t, why would you until you\u2019re confronted with having to deal with it? So there\u2019s all of that sort of stuff to go through as well, your relationship changes gear.\u201d<\/p>\n Asked how the illness changes the dynamic between Marlon and Rhona, Henry says: \u201cWe shot some stuff recently where, while he\u2019s still in hospital she comes back in and he\u2019s on the commode, and that\u2019s a whole world of embarrassment and pain that neither of them I think had considered.\u201d<\/p>\n The actor concludes that part of the ongoing journey will include Rhona\u2019s experience as a carer, alongside Marlon\u2019s recovery: \u201cIt\u2019s happened with lightning speed, she\u2019s gone from being partner to carer overnight and I think it\u2019ll be an interesting journey for her in terms of how she manages that, and if she can do it.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s an ongoing situation, as quickly as it arrives it\u2019s not going to disappear as quickly, this is potentially years of \u2018how do we manage this?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n You can find more information about stroke symptoms, as well as advice and support by visiting the Stroke Association<\/a> website.<\/em><\/p>\n The latest issue of Radio Times is on sale now \u2013\u00a0subscribe now<\/a>\u00a0to get each issue delivered to your door.
