It\u2019s been almost three years since the first season of Sanditon<\/a> hit our screens in 2019, but now the hit series is about to make its return.<\/p>\n

The ITV\/BritBox show, which is based on the unfinished manuscript of the same name by Jane Austen, stars Rose Williams as Charlotte Heywood, while the first season saw Divergent star Theo James co-star as Sidney Parker.<\/p>\n

The final episode of season 1 saw Sidney and Charlotte finally admit their love for each other, but Sidney revealed that he still planned to stick to his word and marry Eliza Campion.<\/p>\n

After this heartbreaking twist it might have seemed that Sidney was set to return and give Charlotte her happy ending in season 2.<\/p>\n

However, in the trailer<\/a> released earlier this year by BritBox, James is nowhere to be seen.<\/p>\n\n<h2><strong>Why isn\u2019t Theo James in Sanditon season 2?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While James\u2019 Sidney Parker was a key character in season 1, it seems the actor felt that one season was enough to tell the story, and decided not to return for either <a href=\""https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/sanditon-return-season-2-3-newsupdate\/"\">season 2 or 3<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, James said: \u201cAlthough I relished playing Sidney, for me, I\u2019ve always maintained that his journey concluded as I wanted it to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe broken fairytale-like ending between Charlotte and Sidney is different, unique and so interesting to me and I wish the cast and crew every success with future series.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\""twitter-tweet"\" data-dnt=\""true"\"><p lang=\""en"\" dir=\""ltr"\"><a href=\""https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SanditonPBS?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw"\">#SanditonPBS<\/a> will return w\/ seasons 2 & 3 and continue Charlotte\u2019s journey through life & love. We can\u2019t wait for you to see what we have in store\u2026 ???? <a href=\""https:\/\/t.co\/8ioma0RbwF"\">pic.twitter.com\/8ioma0RbwF<\/a><\/p>\u2014 MASTERPIECE | PBS (@masterpiecepbs) <a href=\""https:\/\/twitter.com\/masterpiecepbs\/status\/1390667903800856585?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw"\">May 7, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async=\"\" src=\""https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js"\" charset=\""utf-8"\"\/><p>In February 2020, Belinda Campbell, executive producer and joint Managing Director of Red Planet Pictures, had told <a href=\"\/\/www.vulture.com\/2020\/02\/sanditon-series-finale-charlotte-sidney-ending.html"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">Vulture<\/a> that Sidney and Charlotte would \u201cabsolutely\u201d get together in season 2 if the show was recommissioned.<\/p>\n<p>On the season 1 ending \u2013 which saw Sidney reject Charlotte, feeling it was his family duty to marry for money \u2013 she said: \u201cI take no satisfaction after the fact that a lot of people want that happily ever after. And we would love the opportunity to give it to them. Of <em>course\u00a0<\/em>Sidney is going to find a way around it! He\u2019s our hero!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, she also suggested that the season 1 finale was a satisfying place to leave the story, because \u201cwhilst it might not be a Jane Austen ending, it is the reality of how many love stories would\u2019ve ended. So there is a complete story arc there.\u201d<\/p> <p>James\u2019 co-star Rose Williams, meanwhile, told <a href=\""https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/1034600\/sanditon-season-2-filming-locations-charlotte-sidney-alexander-francis\/"\">TV Insider<\/a> earlier this month that in season 2 her character Charlotte Heywood would have learned from her experiences with Sidney: \u201cMy focus was to try and honour the Charlotte that was the Charlotte of episode 1 and also come back fresh, with a bit more emotional experience and growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems that Charlotte will have plenty of <a href=\""https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/sanditon-season-2-new-romance-newsupdate\/"\">other suitors<\/a> this season, with both Francis Lennox, a handsome army colonel played by Tom Weston-Jones, and Alexander Colbourne, a wealthy recluse played Ben Lloyd-Hughes, taking a shine to her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sanditon season 2 streams on BritBox from 21st March and will air on ITV later this year.
