Rather than people marvelling at the duo of Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke facing off against one another, or Marvel introducing the supernatural into the MCU, everyone has become obsessed with Isaac\u2019s rather unique British accent. <\/span><\/p>\n It feels as though Isaac has channelled his inner Dick Van Dyke, hamming up every accentual twinge and over-emphasising the \u2018Britishness\u2019 present in his voice. It has baffled people across the globe, with memes and confusion arising out of it \u2013 even Isaac himself has poked fun in his trailer reaction; so what exactly is going on with Steven\u2019s accent?<\/span><\/p>\n According to Isaac himself, the slightly unconvincing accent may be more intentional than we think. <\/span><\/p> Speaking with <\/span>EMPIRE Magazine<\/span><\/a>, Isaac confidently defended his characterisation, stating that \u201cthere are reason\u201d behind it, and that it\u2019s more \u201cabout where Steven\u2019s from, where he\u2019s living now, and some of his believed heritage\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s clear that Isaac is playing up the complicated mystery of the series around understanding who the man under the cowl <\/span>truly<\/span><\/i> is \u2013 whether that be Steven Grant or Marc Spector. As Isaac clarified, \u201cit\u2019s not an idea of what Brits <\/span>actually<\/span><\/i> sound like\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n It was actually the actor himself who came up with accent experimentation in order to further differentiate Steven and Marc, according to showrunner Jeremy Slater: \u201cIn the initial script, the difference between Steven and Marc was in attitude \u2013 it was Oscar who said, \u2018What about an accent?\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n There\u2019s clearly a method to Isaac\u2019s accentual madness, as director Mohamed Diab reaffirmed that \u201canything Oscar does is deliberate\u201d. So it appears that there is more to Steven\u2019s hyper-cockney tones than meets the ear \u2013 but how accurate is the voice to <\/span>actual <\/span>British accents?<\/span><\/p>\n We asked experts from the language learning and analysis platform <\/span>Babbel<\/span><\/a> to get a deeper understanding of Isaac\u2019s characterisation. In-house expert Ted Mentele commented: \u201cIn recent years, portrayals of British accents on screen have been dominated by Received Pronunciation (RP) which is often the world\u2019s idea of the \u2018perfect\u2019 British accent, despite it being a non-regionalised accent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n It seems that in an effort to provide a more complicated, detailed performance, Isaac has adopted \u201ca softer, southern regional accent \u2013 think neutral tones native to those from London, or the South East\u201d. As a result, the \u2018imperfections\u2019 as Mentele calls them are what viewers have scrutinised Isaac for \u2013 but from this language expert\u2019s perspective, \u201calthough exaggerated, Isaac\u2019s interpretation is broadly accurate for this region\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s clear that nothing is as it seems in <\/span>Moon Knight<\/span> and shouldn\u2019t be taken at face value \u2013 especially Marc and Steven. According to Mentele, Steven\u2019s personality hinges on a \u2018Mockney\u2019 accent: \u201cOften, you can spot a Mockney accent by its skipping of T\u2019s (like turning \u2018water\u2019 into a two-syllable \u2018wa\u2019er\u2019) and elongating certain vowels (specifically A and E) \u2013 both of which are noticeable in Isaac\u2019s delivery in the teaser trailers alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Given that Steven and Marc are somewhat polar opposites, it\u2019s unsurprising that the identity of Steven may over-exaggerate their Britishness as a further separation from the Chicago-originated Marc, thereby giving rise to the \u2018Mockney\u2019 accent that Mentele mentions. <\/span><\/p>\n Given Marc and Steven\u2019s erratic relationship, it makes sense that the last thing Steven\u2019s voice would be is \u2018perfect\u2019, and Isaac appears to have folded this into his separation of the two.
