In an Instagram post, Smith \u2013 who went on to win his first Oscar in the Best Actor category for his performance in King Richard \u2013 apologised to Rock, the Academy, the Williams Family and \u201ceveryone watching around the world\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cViolence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behaviour at last night\u2019s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n
\u201cJokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada\u2019s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/div>He apologised to Rock, saying that he was \u201cout of line\u201d and \u201cwrong\u201d before adding: \u201cI am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.\u201d<\/p>\n
After apologising to the show\u2019s producers, the attendees, the Williams Family and those that worked on King Richard, Smith ended his statement by saying that he \u201cdeeply regretted\u201d his behaviour which \u201cstained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am a work in progress,\u201d he added.<\/p>
While this is the first time Smith has publicly spoken about the incident since the Oscars took place on Sunday, he did reference the moment during his acceptance speech for Best Actor just 20 minutes after the slap occurred.<\/p>\n
During the speech, he apologised to the Academy before adding that \u201clove will make you do crazy things\u201d and that he hoped the Academy would invite him back.<\/p>\n
