Almost two years after Suranne Jones first strode onto BBC One as the fourth-wall breaking, real-life landowner and diarist Anne Lister, Gentleman Jack is returning for a season 2.<\/p>\n

And it looks like it\u2019s been worth the wait: a brand-new trailer<\/a> has given fans a glimpse of what\u2019s next for Anne after she exchanged vows with her lover Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) in a private ceremony at the end of season 1 \u2013 and there certainly looks to be drama aplenty.<\/p>\n

The new clip shows the couple shacking up at Anne\u2019s ancestral home of Shibden Hall<\/a> as wife and wife, as well as finally touring Europe together.<\/p>\n

But of course, it isn\u2019t all plain-sailing for the pair, with the trailer offering a first look at trouble brewing for\u00a0Anne as her former lover Mariana Lawton (Lydia Leonard) makes a dramatic return. \u201cI\u2019m not the other woman. She is,\u201d she tells Anne.<\/p>\n

Gentleman Jack<\/a> creator Sally Wainwright previously teased that season 2 will put Anne and Ann\u2019s romance<\/a> to the test.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey move into Shibden together in series 2 and it\u2019s about how they negotiate their married life, conspicuously in public, and how they deal with their detractors and the effect that has on their relationship as well,\u201d\u00a0she previously told\u00a0Digital Spy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, the trailer teases local scandal as Anne\u2019s business rivals circle and look to use the situation to their own advantage.<\/p>\n

Talking about season 2<\/a>, director and screenwriter Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley<\/a>,\u00a0Last Tango in Halifax<\/a>,\u00a0Scott and Bailey<\/a>) said in a statement:\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m utterly delighted that we\u2019ve been recommissioned because there are so many more big, bold stories to tell about Anne Lister and Ann Walker.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, I\u2019m quite overwhelmed to be honest,\u201d she added. \u201cI think because it\u2019s been such an emotional reaction. That I wasn\u2019t really anticipating.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cObviously it\u2019s had a big impact amongst gay women and the love for it is overwhelming, and that\u2019s so beautiful and exciting, but also so many straight women are feeling empowered by it as well. It\u2019s not just making gay women feel vindicated and empowered.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s great. I just think it\u2019s brilliant for people to see a woman who just goes out and gets what she wants. One of the big things for me that I\u2019ve learned about Anne Lister, through the process of writing this, is that she just had really good mental health and she had a real healthy opinion of herself. She wasn\u2019t plagued with self doubt or lack of confidence, she was very lucky I think \u2013 she had very good, very good mental health. And that\u2019s what I find most inspiring and uplifting about her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got this joke on set\u2026 If we weren\u2019t quite sure what the next step was, we would go, \u2018What would Anne Lister do?\u2019 And it really inspired us all. We\u2019ve all got t-shirts now with it written on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gentleman Jack season 2 will premiere on\u00a0BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on Sunday 10th April<\/strong>, with eight shiny new episodes for you to binge.<\/p>\n

New episodes will land weekly.<\/p>\n

Gentleman Jack star Sophie Rundle announced that filming<\/a> had wrapped on season 2 back in October 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cCorrr it\u2019s been a long time coming but after a year \u2013 a whole YEAR \u2013 we have FINALLY wrapped on Gentleman Jack s2! The initial plan was to commence filming season 2 in June 2020, but production was delayed due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cReluctantly we have decided to delay the start of production of Gentleman Jack series two due to the ongoing COVID-19 emergency,\u201d the production company said in a statement.<\/a> \u201cHuge thanks to our cast and crew, and to our incredible, inspiring fans for their understanding. Alongside Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, who play Anne Lister and her wife Ann in the show,\u00a0other returning characters include Marian Lister (Gemma Whelan), Lady Vere Hobart (Jodhi May), Elizabeth Sutherland (Katherine Kelly) and Captain George Sutherland (Derek Riddell).<\/p>\n

In addition, Mariana Lawton (Lydia Leonard), Aunt Ann Walker (Stephanie Cole), William Priestly (Peter Davison), Eliza Priestley (Amelia Bullmore), Christopher Rawson (Vincent Franklin), Jeremiah Rawson (Shaun Dooley), Elizabeth Cordingley (Rosie Cavaliero), Samuel Washington (Joe Armstrong), Ben Sowden (Anthony Flanagan) and James Holt (George Costigan) will be returning for season 2.<\/p>\n

The Larkins\u2019<\/a>\u00a0Joanna Scanlan has also joined the cast as Isabella \u201cTib\u201d Norcliffe, Anne\u2019s \u201coutrageous former lover\u201d (above), which probably won\u2019t go down so well with Ann.<\/p>\n

The BBC has released the first full-length trailer for Gentleman Jack season 2, giving fans a first look at trouble in paradise for Anne and Ann as they settle at Shibden Hall as wife and wife.<\/p>\n

The clip also shows the pair finally touring Europe together, with Ann telling Anne: \u201cI\u2019ve never seen you like this. So happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anne\u2019s bubble is soon burst, however, as her former lover Mariana Lawton (Lydia Leonard) makes a dramatic return and attempts to stake a claim to Anne. \u201cI\u2019m not the other woman. She is,\u201d she tells her, speaking of course about Ann.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe hasn\u2019t got a clue about the vast rich tapestry of your fruity past,\u201d says BAFTA Film Awards 2022 winner Joanna Scanlan as her new character Isabella \u2018Tib\u2019 Norcliffe, another of Anne\u2019s former lovers.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the trailer makes clear that Anne and Ann have become the subject of local gossip, with Anne\u2019s business rivals looking to use the situation to their own advantage. Watch below:<\/p>\n
