{"id":13107,"date":"2022-03-31T13:25:34","date_gmt":"2022-03-31T11:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=608754"},"modified":"2022-03-31T14:04:28","modified_gmt":"2022-03-31T12:04:28","slug":"avatar-2-release-date-cast-and-latest-trailer-speculation","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/avatar-2-release-date-cast-and-latest-trailer-speculation\/","title":{"rendered":"Avatar 2: release date, cast and latest trailer speculation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Ben Allen\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 31 March 2022 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The sequel to James Cameron\u2019s Avatar has taken its sweet time getting here, but it looks as if we\u2019re finally going to get our hands on the movie by the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p>The sci-fi adventure briefly lost the title of \u2018highest grossing movie of all-time\u2019 to <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/avengers-endgame-release-date-marvel-infinity-war-sequel-cast-plot\/&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot;\">Avengers: Endgame<\/a>, but claimed it back last year following a special cinema re-release in China.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, it has been argued that interest in this franchise has waned during its 13-year absence, especially as that timeframe has seen the likes of Marvel Studios change the landscape of blockbuster cinema.<\/p>\n<p>However, the team behind the movie seem confident that the lush vistas of Pandora will tempt audiences back, including star Zoe Saldana, who has teased the film\u2019s technological breakthroughs and emotional heft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was finally able to crack that challenge; that whole thing that you can\u2019t imitate water virtually through performance capture,\u201d she began in an interview with reporter <a href=\"\/\/twitter.com\/KevinMcCarthyTV\/status\/1502259670936866823&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Kevin McCarthy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was just a challenge he had taken upon himself and it took him years and he did it. It\u2019s powerful, it\u2019s compelling. I can get choked up just talking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saldana added: \u201cI was able to see just 20 minutes of the second instalment right before the year ended, last year [2021], and I was speechless. I was moved to tears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With statements like that, it\u2019s understandable that movie fans are keen to feast their eyes on Avatar 2 footage themselves, with recent speculation claiming they\u2019ll be able to do just that in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/theankler.com\/p\/transom-avatar-2-trailer-gets-a-date?s=r&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" to the coronavirus pandemic, but the latest release date it has landed on seems to be its most plausible yet.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, we\u2019re saying with some confidence that movie-goers can expect to see Avatar 2 in cinemas on\u00a0<strong>Friday 16th December 2022<\/strong>, roughly 13 years to the day since the release of the first film.<\/p>\n<p>Filming on the sequels took such a long time because of the technological advancements required to tell the story and the logistical challenges of filming Avatar 2, 3 and 4 at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>Following the latest shuffle of Warner Bros release dates, Avatar 2 will now be going up against Shazam! Fury of the Gods at the box office, with the director of the DC Comics sequel recently acknowledging his tough competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoor James Cameron must be shaking in his boots right now,\u201d <a href=\"\/\/twitter.com\/ponysmasher\/status\/1501656772280348673&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a> David F Sandberg in March 2022. Here\u2019s hoping there\u2019s enough room at the multiplex for both films to find an audience.<\/p>\n<p>Once the first Avatar sequel is finally released, fans won\u2019t have so long to wait for further adventures on Pandora, as Avatar 3 is slated for just two years later on 20th December 2024.<\/p>\n<p>There will be another two years before the following entry, as Avatar 4 is currently due to arrive on 18th December 2026, while the fifth movie will launch on 22nd December 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, take this ambitious plan with a grain of salt; Avatar 2 was initially scheduled for release in 2014, so that gives you an idea of just how unreliable these official dates have been up until now.<\/p>\n<p>However, it does bode well that much of the principal photography for the first trilogy is now complete, with Cameron offering an update to Dune director Denis Villeneuve as part of Variety\u2019s <a href=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RgZQK7cfx_0&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Directors on Directors<\/a> series.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Avatar] 2 is kind of fully in the can, we have a working cut that we\u2019re filling in the visual effects and I feel pretty confident with that film,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Avatar] 3 is still a bit shadowy, it\u2019s way too long and I haven\u2019t really turned my energy into a disciplined cutting process on that yet, but I know I\u2019ve got it. I know I\u2019ve got the performances and that\u2019s the important thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cI\u2019ve done all the capture and I\u2019ve done most of the live-action shooting. I still have a little bit on some of the adult characters because we were more concerned with the kids ageing out [of their roles].\u201d<\/p> <h2><strong>What will the Avatar films be called?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>BBC News previously reported that it had \u201cseen documentation\u201d which <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/have-the-avatar-sequel-titles-just-been-revealed\/&quot;\">revealed the titles for the four sequels<\/a> as the following:<\/p>\n<ul><li>Avatar: The Way of Water<\/li>\n<li>Avatar: The Seed Bearer<\/li>\n<li>Avatar: The Tulkun Rider<\/li>\n<li>Avatar: The Quest for Eywa<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>However, nothing has been officially confirmed just yet and, even if the documentation is accurate, the titles could very well change before release.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Avatar 2 cast \u2013 new and returning characters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div Jake Sully and Neytiri, played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana respectively, who reportedly will have started a family together in the sequel.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Cameron\u2019s longtime collaborator Sigourney Weaver has stated she will also return for the next movie, but told <a href=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-3_o67a1wY4&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">The Jonathan Ross Show<\/a> back in 2015 that she won\u2019t be playing the same character.<\/p>\n<p>That makes sense given that the fate of Dr Grace Augustine was left uncertain by the events of the first film, although it appears that death will be no major obstacle in this sci-fi saga.<\/p>\n<p>Case in point: it has also been confirmed that Stephen Lang (<a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/dont-breathe-2-release-date\/&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot;\">Don\u2019t Breathe<\/a>) will be returning for the sequels as the villainous Colonel Miles Quaritch, who was killed after waging an immoral war against the Na\u2019vi in the first film\u2019s final act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to say exactly how we\u2019re bringing him back, but it\u2019s a science fiction story, after all,\u201d Cameron told <a href=\"\/\/deadline.com\/2013\/10\/james-cameron-has-found-avatars-darth-vader-its-stephen-lang-617426\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Deadline<\/a> in 2013. His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other returning cast members include Giovanni Ribisi as corporate stooge Parker Selfridge, Matt Gerald as mercenary Lyle Wainfleet and CCH Pounder as Neytiri\u2019s mother Mo\u2019at, while Joel David Moore and Dileep Rao reprise their roles as Jake\u2019s human allies Dr Norm It\u2019s a little bit like a fighter plane dumping a bunch of chaff to confuse the radar system of a missile. It creates thousands of false targets, so we\u2019ve had to figure out how to get around that problem, which we did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically, whenever you add water to any problem, it just gets ten times harder.
