Ever since it aired its final episodes back in 2017, Sherlock fans have been desperate for the hit detective show to make a return.<\/p>\n

And while new seasons aren\u2019t in the pipeline for the time being, the show\u2019s creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have said they\u2019d be delighted to write more \u2013 if only Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were available.<\/p>\n

<\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/div>\n
\u201cThey were very loyal to that show over a very long while when it was out, when it definitely became their lowest paying job,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I don\u2019t think that\u2019s necessarily what they want to do now \u2013 fair enough, absolutely fair enough. But if anyone thinks I\u2019m the one getting in the way, I will confidently tell you I would start writing it tomorrow, if everybody else did too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Moffat went on to talk about one other problem that \u201cnone of us might be able to get past\u201d: the sad death of Mrs. Hudson star Una Stubbs, who passed away aged 84 last summer.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe if we reassembled that set and she didn\u2019t magically appear, we might all be too sad to make a show,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo those are the facts. We would do it, I\u2019d do it, Mark would do it, Sue would do it. We might be too sad to get through it. And we\u2019d need our leading men and, quite understandably, they may well feel they\u2019ve done their time.\u201d<\/p>
In a separate interview, Gatiss added his twopence \u2013 claiming they\u2019ve \u201cnot shut the door\u201d and reiterating that he, Moffat and Vertue would all \u201cvery much like to do some more\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut you may have noticed, the cast are very busy,\u201d he continued. \u201cSo that\u2019s where we are at the moment really. I mean\u2026 who can say?\u201d<\/p>\n
Cumberbatch and Freeman have certainly not been lacking for parts in recent times. The former was up for Best Actor at last week\u2019s Oscars for his turn in Jane Campion\u2019s The Power of the Dog, while the latter gave one of the best performances of his career in recent BBC One drama The Responder<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, both actors have roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe \u2013 Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Freeman as Everett K. Ross \u2013 in addition to a whole host of other projects on screens both big and small.<\/p>\n
But who knows, maybe somewhere down the line a return to 221B Baker Street could still be on the cards\u2026<\/p>\n
