In the Line of Duty<\/a>\u00a0season 6 finale<\/a>, it was revealed that none other than Ian Buckells \u2013 who so many had written off as utterly incompetent, and certainly not a villain \u2013 who was unmasked as the omniscient and omnipotent Fourth Man, aka \u2018H\u2019.<\/p>\n

There had been multiple contenders for the role of big bad across the show\u2019s six seasons, with Ted Hastings, Kate Fleming and Steve Arnott all accused at one point or another.<\/p>\n

But creator Jed Mercurio had gone in a different direction entirely, with actor Nigel Boyle, who had flitted in an out of the show, entrusted with the role.<\/p>

As soon as season 6 wrapped up, there were questions about whether the series would return for season 7<\/a>, with rumblings that there was a desire to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to do another series,\u201d Dunbar previously told RadioTimes.com<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>and other press.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to get onto Jed and say, \u2018Look, we\u2019ve got to do one that\u2019s not like when we were in lockdown. We\u2019ve got to do one where we\u2019re back on the ground, we\u2019re out there, we\u2019re in the city, we\u2019re having fun\u2019. You know it\u2019s a great city to have fun in, Belfast, so we really want to get back to doing that again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vicky McClure told The Guardian<\/a> in January this year that the cast were \u201call game\u201d for more, and LoD newcomer Shalom Brune-Franklin also said she\u2019d return to the show<\/a> if asked.<\/p>\n

Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a> at the Radio Times Covers Party <\/strong>recently, this is what Boyle had to say: \u201cI was chatting to [executive producer] Simon Heath earlier and I was saying, \u2018Come on mate. [What\u2019s happening?]\u201d And he was like, \u201cWe\u2019d kind of like to but we don\u2019t know if it\u2019s going to happen.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018What\u2019s the official line?\u2019 And he said, \u2018Well, there isn\u2019t one.’\u201d<\/p>\n

On if we\u2019ll see Buckells again if it does get the greenlight, Boyle predicted that the potential is there, but he\u2019d likely die very early on.<\/p>\n

Before season 6 arrived, this is what Mercurio told RadioTimes.com<\/strong> about the future of the show: \u201cWe\u2019re in a situation where it\u2019s not entirely clear that there will be a seventh series.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would hope there could be. But we\u2019re having to do our planning coming out of COVID, and a whole bunch of other things\u2026 these things aren\u2019t guaranteed at all now.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cA lot of it depends on the key creatives \u2013 that\u2019s me and the main actors \u2013 finding new stories to tell within that universe. Line of Duty may have reached \u2018the Chandrasekhar Limit\u2019, at which a mass collapses under its own gravitational force.\u201d<\/p>\n
