But with the press gunning for a guilty conviction, the \u201cblack widow\u201d, as she\u2019s labelled, enlists the help of investigative journalist James Aiden (Agent Carter\u2019s<\/a> James D\u2019Arcy) in an attempt to clear her name.<\/p>\n \u201cEverything is trial by media these days,\u201d Murphy told RadioTimes.com<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely a commentary on that. Whether she\u2019s guilty or innocent, people have made up their minds before she even hits the courtroom, and that has happened time and time again [in the real world].<\/p>\n \u201c[We discussed] how people judge how others react to losing someone, what is socially acceptable; how people study people\u2019s behaviour, if they cry or if they don\u2019t cry.\u201d<\/p>\n D\u2019Arcy referenced the case of Amanda Knox, who criticised the media\u2019s portrayal of her and accused them of building a false narrative as she stood trial for the murder of student Meredith Kercher, for which she was ultimately acquitted in 2015.<\/p>\n \u201cAmanda Knox was a definite touchstone for us in terms of references of trial by media,\u201d D\u2019Arcy said. \u201cWe talked about the way the tabloid media will spin things.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s obviously the starting point of the entire show. He\u2019s putting together the [crime] reconstruction [for his documentary] and he\u2019s made a decision already. There\u2019s a narrative in there that he\u2019s decided.<\/p>\n \u201cThe media is biased. It needs clickbait.\u201d<\/p> Chatting about what initially attracted her to the project, Murphy said: \u201cIt\u2019s safe to say we\u2019re both Hitchcock fans and there\u2019s definitely that tone to it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n D\u2019Arcy agreed: \u201cI\u2019ve known the director for a while and he explained how he was going to borrow from Hitchcock, and that to me was pretty exciting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI also thought they did the twists really well. I feel like I\u2019m very familiar with watching thrillers and this one, I just couldn\u2019t quite place where it was going to go next.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Deadline airs on Tuesday 5th April at 9pm on Channel 5.
