The film follows an operation organised by naval representative Ewen Montagu (Colin Firth) and British intelligence officer Charles Cholmondeley (Matthew Macfadyen) to deceive the Nazis and keep the Allied Invasion of Sicily a secret.<\/p>\n
Among the cast of characters involved in the operation is Lieutenant-Commander Ian Fleming, played by Flynn, the man who would go on to create one of literature\u2019s most iconic characters: James Bond<\/a>.<\/p>\n Overseeing the operation is Fleming\u2019s sceptical boss, Admiral John Godfrey, played by Jason Isaacs, who would eventually become the inspiration for Bond\u2019s own boss, \u2018M\u2019.<\/p>\n Throughout the film, there are various nods to elements in Fleming\u2019s life that would inspire the characters.<\/p>\n Flynn sat down with co-star Jason Isaacs to discuss the film with RadioTimes.com<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n Describing why he wanted to play Fleming, Flynn revealed: \u201cI\u2019m a huge fan of spy thrillers and films, you know \u2013 early Bond films, basically.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued by saying it was\u00a0<\/span>\u201ca huge thrill to reference that stuff, to have the scenes in Q branch, and it was just fun to learn his real story, to learn that he was really there\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI went back and read some of the Bond novels and had fun realising that a lot of that stuff was informed by his experience of the world,\u201d Flynn added.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Jason Isaacs portrays Admiral John Henry Godfrey in the film \u2013 best known for being the inspiration of Fleming\u2019s iconic boss for 007, known as \u2018M\u2019.<\/p>\n However, Isaacs was more concerned with Godfrey\u2019s real-life history than the Bond novels themselves.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t read the Bond books, I read about Godfrey, his history and also the other much bigger section operation that Mincemeat was part of, Operation Barclay, all of which was designed to make the Germans think that the Allies were going to land in Greece,\u201d explained Isaacs.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd there were many, many other parts to the operation that were working rather brilliantly, and Godfrey has the unenviable position in our story of being the man who doesn\u2019t think Mincemeat should go ahead, because it endangers all the other intersections.<\/p>\n \u201cIf for some reason this is discovered, it means that the huge efforts of creating a fictional 12th army and setting up a base in Cairo and all the operations in Greece will all have been wasted.\u201d<\/p> Isaacs continued: \u201cSo he\u2019s the guy that says, \u2018Don\u2019t put all your money on double zero roulette\u2019 when the audience goes, \u2018But I know it comes up double zero!\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cSo I might not look that smart in the film, given that we know it worked, but actually, he\u2019s maybe the smartest man in the room.
