The new Netflix<\/a> series tells the blossoming love story between two school boys, popular rugby player Nick Nelson (Connor) and introverted outcast Charlie (Joe Locke), first chronicled in a celebrated series of graphic novels<\/a>.<\/p>\n Not only are their personalities different but their physical appearance is too, with Nick illustrated as more athletic than Charlie, who opts primarily for artistic and musical pursuits.<\/p> With this in mind, Connor told RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press that he knew he didn\u2019t match the description of Charlie, but couldn\u2019t resist auditioning for the part anyway as the character\u2019s writing was so strong.<\/p>\n He began: \u201cI originally auditioned in a self-tape for Joe\u2019s character, for Charlie, which literally whenever I tell people that they\u2019re just like: \u2018Why? Why would you do that?\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cIt was just a stroke of luck really because I was thinking, especially sending that tape through, the real reason I was doing it is because I knew about the project \u2013 I thought it was an amazing project I\u2019d like to be a part of.<\/p>\n \u201cBut also, the audition tape they sent through was one of Charlie\u2019s speeches where he\u2019s really just at his most genuine, most stripped back point and it\u2019s really beautifully written, and I thought, \u2018I really want to do this.’\u201d<\/p>\n Connor added: \u201cI thought, \u2018There\u2019s no chance I\u2019m going to get it,\u2019 because physically there\u2019s nothing about me that could fit this character, but then luckily there was Nick that I could sort of slot into quite well.\u201d<\/p>\n The Heartstopper cast<\/a> consists largely of newcomers, with Rocketman star Connor and Game of Thrones alum Sebastian Croft among the more established names.<\/p>\n Heartstopper is available to stream on Netflix from Friday 22nd April 2022.
