The latest episode of Derry Girls<\/a> featured a hilarious tribute to the Spice Girls, as Erin, Clare, Michelle, Orla and James each donned spectacular costumes to perform as the \u201990s girl band at a school talent show.<\/p>\n The routine went down a storm with viewers, but fans were quick to note that one particularly iconic outfit was missing \u2013 with no sight of Geri Horner\u2019s Union Jack dress.<\/p>\n Of course, given the climate of Northern Ireland both then and now, this absence shouldn\u2019t come as any great shock \u2013 the Union Jack is very much seen as a political symbol in support of Unionism, which is at odds with the beliefs of the sitcom\u2019s Catholic characters.<\/p>\n Creator Lisa McGee pointed this out during a recent interview with Digital Spy<\/a>, revealing why it would not have been appropriate to include the dress.<\/p>\n \u201cErin is Ginger, but we haven\u2019t done the Union Jack dress because that would have been not okay to Catholics in Derry,\u201d she said. \u201cOur amazing costume designer made her a glittery dress with a peace sign on.\u201d<\/p> McGee had earlier revealed that the dance had been inspired by her own teenage years, claiming that there was a \u201chorrific\u201d video of her and her friends performing a similar routine.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were so bad \u2013 I mean spectacularly bad but we thought we were amazing,\u201d she explained at a Q&A at the show\u2019s Derry premiere, as reported by Belfast Live<\/a>.<\/p>\n The #DerryGirls<\/a> performing as the Spice Girls is nothing short of iconic.@nicolacoughlan<\/a> @Djllewellyn<\/a> @SaoirseJackson<\/a> @louisa_harland<\/a> @JamieLeeOD<\/a> @LisaMMcGee<\/a> pic.twitter.com\/Ht4gVyYGU7<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Channel 4 (@Channel4) April 19, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote>
