However, it\u2019s far from wedding bliss for the couple in season 2, with the dramatic return of Anne\u2019s scorned lover Mariana Lawton (Lydia Leonard) threatening\u00a0to put their romance to the test<\/a>.<\/p>\n After dozens of emotionally charged letters between the pair, Gentleman Jack season 2 episode 4, which aired tonight (1st May), saw Anne pay Mariana a visit \u2013 with disastrous consequences.<\/p>\n But what happened between Anne and Mariana in real-life?<\/p>\n Read on to find out how much Anne\u2019s relationship with Mariana on screen is based on fact, and how much is an embellished version of the diary entries. But\u00a0be warned:\u00a0spoilers for the full series<\/strong> follow below.<\/p>\n In Gentleman Jack season 2, we see Anne starting to have doubts \u2013 is Ann too boring, too insipid for her?<\/p>\n This is indeed based in fact. While it\u00a0was in many ways a good match, Anne and Ann couldn\u2019t have been more different.<\/p>\n Anne was fiercely intelligent and an avid traveller and, by\u00a0the time Anne met Ann in 1832, she had lived many<\/em> lives, and loved many<\/em> women.<\/p>\n After visiting Crow Nest in 1833,\u00a0Lister wrote of Walker in her diary:\u00a0\u201cI never saw such a hope\u00acless person in my life. \u2018How miserable,\u2019 said I to myself, \u2018Thank God my own mind\u2019s not like hers.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n However, Anne Lister made it clear early on in her relationship with Ann that she was after loyalty and long-term commitment and,\u00a0while\u00a0Mariana did try to tempt Anne, she did not break her oath to Ann, <\/strong>as Suranne Jones\u2019 Anne does in season 2,\u00a0episode 4 of the show.<\/p>\n It was actually during a week-long visit to Shibden in November 1836 that Mariana tried to seduce Anne \u2013 two years after Ann had moved into Shibden Hall.<\/p>\n In Gentleman Jack: The Real Anne Lister, Anne Choma writes of the visit: \u201cAt first Mariana was shocked at just how settled Anne and Ann were as a couple. Occasionally she tried to tempt Anne with an \u2018open-lipped\u2019 kiss but Anne resisted, refusing all intimacy<\/strong>. \u2018The fact is,\u2019 said Anne, when Mariana left to return to Lawton Hall, \u2018I am not sorry she is gone.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n And that was that.\u00a0Anne and Ann lived a happy and settled life together, with\u00a0Anne keeping Mariana and her other former lovers at a distance.<\/p>\n Anne met Mariana Belcombe in 1813 when she was 23 years old and Mariana was 24.<\/p>\n It was the most passionate of all of Anne\u2019s affairs, and lasted 16 or 17 years but, despite Anne\u2019s hopes they could \u2018marry\u2019, Mariana caved and married a man \u2013\u00a056-year-old widower Charles Lawton \u2013\u00a0for economic stability.<\/p>\n The newly-named Mariana Lawton continued to have an affair with Anne even after her marriage, with frequent visits between the pair and echoes of old love remaining a common theme in their correspondence.<\/p>\n But their relationship was also fraught with the pain of their romantic history, and\u00a0Anne began to hope that someone else would appear with whom she could build a future together.<\/p>\n \u201cI always look on the bright side.
