Only a couple of passing mentions have been made to the wider Marvel universe throughout the first five episodes<\/a> \u2013 however, this wasn\u2019t always going to be the case.<\/p>\n Speaking on the House of R podcast<\/a> this week, the show\u2019s head writer and executive producer Jeremy Slater revealed that Oscar Isaac\u2019s Marc and Steven were originally meant to have a different love interest than May Calamawy\u2019s Layla \u2013 and it was none other than Hawkeye<\/a>\u2018s Echo.<\/p>\n Slater said: \u201cAt the time, Echo was go to be our love interest, solely<\/em> based on the fact that they knew Marvel liked the character of Echo and was trying to find a show to put her in.\u201d<\/p>\n Echo, otherwise known as Maya Lopez, has been a love interest of Marc Spector in the comics, but Slater revealed that \u201cshe didn\u2019t work at all for the story we were telling. [Marvel] were like, \u2018You know what, we\u2019ve got this Hawkeye show and we feel like she would fit in a lot better there\u2026,\u2019 and we were like, \u2018Oh, thank God<\/em>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Echo\u2019s debut in 2021\u2019s Hawkeye saw her out for revenge against Ronin for killing her father, while it was later revealed that her boss the Kingpin<\/a>, known as \u201cuncle\u201d, had arranged for his death. She is set to return in her own spin-off show on Disney Plus<\/a>, and will once again be played by Alaqua Cox.<\/p> While speaking on the podcast, Slater also revealed that Bushman, a long-time comics adversary<\/a> of Moon Knight and the mercenary who betrayed Marc and killed Layla\u2019s father in the show, was initially going to be the main villain.
