href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/current-affairs\/channel-4-sold-ownership-privatisation-newsupdate\/&quot;\">privatisation of Channel 4<\/a> has caused quite the stir, yet the move has also proved confusing.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the BBC, Channel 4 is funded through advertising rather than the licence fee, despite being publicly owned, with this leaving some unsure what the news will mean for viewers.<\/p>\n<p>In exclusive polling conducted by <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/&quot;\">RadioTimes.com<\/a>, more than 1,000 readers voted to determine whether the general public understands the impact the privatisation of Channel 4 would have on viewers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RadioTimes.com<\/strong> found that 63 per cent didn\u2019t fully understand the implications, while 37 per cent said they did.<\/p>\n<p>The move to sell off the public service broadcaster was confirmed by Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries in early April.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, she said: \u201cChannel 4 rightly holds a cherished place in British life and I want that to remain the case.<\/p>\n<div class=\"&quot;image-handler__container\" image-handler__container--full=\"\" A change of ownership will give Channel 4 the tools and freedom to flourish and thrive as a public service broadcaster long into the future.<\/p>\n<div class=\"&quot;ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper\" e1xue1i86=\"\" data-component=\"&quot;text-block&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer\" e5tfeyi1=\"\">\n<p>\u201cI will seek to reinvest the proceeds of the sale into levelling up the creative sector, putting money into independent production and creative skills in priority parts of the country \u2013 delivering a creative dividend for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the government launched a consultation into the move last year, it outlined the potential advantages of selling Channel 4 to a private company.<\/p>\n<div class=\"&quot;ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper\" e1xue1i86=\"\" data-component=\"&quot;text-block&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer\" e5tfeyi1=\"\">\n<p class=\"&quot;ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph\" eq5iqo00=\"\">\u201cThere are constraints that come with public ownership, and a new owner could bring access and benefits, including access to capital, to strategic partnerships and to the international markets,\u201d it said at the time. \u201cPrivate investment would mean more content, and more jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div> <p>However, the move has proved controversial, with Channel 4 calling the news \u201cdisappointing\u201d and a host of TV industry figures hitting back at the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Saoirse-Monica Jackson recently told <a href=\"text=TV%20programmes%20like%20Derry%20Girls,to%20privatise%20the%20TV%20channel.&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">BBC News<\/a> that shows like Derry Girls would \u201cwould never get made\u201d by a privatised Channel 4, and called the news \u201cdevastating\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Meanwhile, Armando Iannucci wrote in <a href=\"\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/apr\/06\/we-own-channel-4-sell-off-isnt-a-done-deal-armando-iannucci&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">The Guardian<\/a> that \u201cthe truth is, though, it\u2019s not the government that owns Channel 4: we, the public, do\u201d, and said \u201cthe debate on Channel 4 isn\u2019t over\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Location, Location, Location presenter Kirstie Allsopp also spoke out on the government\u2019s announcement, claiming that, if Channel 4 is sold, \u201c[p]rofit will be king and the passion and inclusion of Channel 4 will be lost\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"&quot;twitter-tweet&quot;\" data-dnt=\"&quot;true&quot;\"><p lang=\"&quot;en&quot;\" dir=\"&quot;ltr&quot;\">Let\u2019s just get this out of the way, LLL makes a fortune for C4, shows like mine are very unlikely to be axed, it\u2019s news &amp; current affairs, and cutting edge dramas which are likely to be thinned out.
