Ncuti Gatwa was confirmed as the next Doctor<\/a> over the weekend and while most Doctor Who<\/a> fans were delighted, many had previously been convinced that It\u2019s A Sin star Lydia West was set to take on the role.<\/p>\n

However, the 28-year-old has confirmed that she was never actually in the running for it.<\/p>\n

West, who is best known for playing Jill in Russell T Davies\u2019 It\u2019s A Sin, revealed on Sunday that she was never officially up for the role of the Doctor, despite the recent speculation in the media.<\/p>\n

When asked whether she had been in contention to play the titular Time Lord, West told RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press on the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet: \u201cI wasn\u2019t, no. I was not.\u201d<\/p>

However, she added that she was \u201cso happy\u201d for Gatwa when she heard the casting news.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s absolutely brilliant. I can\u2019t wait to see it,\u201d she said. \u201cWhatever Russell touches, it\u2019s just amazing, as we know. I think Ncuti\u2019s brilliant, he\u2019s just the perfect successor, so I\u2019m thrilled.\u201d<\/p>\n

While there were many names rumoured to be taking over from Jodie Whittaker<\/a> on Doctor Who, West\u2019s was arguably the most talked-about, with Jodie Whittaker telling Radio Times<\/strong> magazine in May that she \u201cwould absolutely smash\u201d the role<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, West herself commented on the rumours in November, saying: \u201cI mean, the fact I\u2019ve been named as one of the favourites is quite special,\u201d before adding that incoming showrunner Russell T Davies would bring \u201ca modern twist\u201d to the show.<\/p>\n
