It was announced over the weekend that Gatwa had won the coveted lead role in Doctor Who, and will make his debut as the Time Lord after Jodie Whittaker bows out of the series<\/a> next year.<\/p>\n Capaldi is among several former Doctors to offer his congratulations to Gatwa, including Matt Smith, Sylvester McCoy<\/a>, David Tennant and Whittaker herself.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat a great story \u2013 a little boy whose family escaped from the genocide in Rwanda in 1994 and at age two, finds refuge in Scotland, where he grows up to become Doctor Who,\u201d Capaldi said.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s a story to be proud. With his huge talent and heart, I know Ncuti will make an amazing Doctor. How exciting,\u201d he added, in a clip for STV News<\/a>.<\/p>\n Gatwa, who\u2019s best known for playing fan-favourite Eric on Sex Education<\/a>, recently took to Instagram<\/a>\u00a0to thank a number of previous Doctor Who<\/a> stars for their \u201cbeautiful words of support\u201d.<\/p> The actor wrote he was \u201cstunned and speechless\u201d at the reaction to him taking over the role of the Doctor.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are a lot of thank you\u2019s in this caption so please excuse the cringe.
