The Conversations with Friends<\/a> finale ended with a twist, as Frances \u2013 who split from married actor Nick earlier in the season \u2013 appeared on the precipice of reuniting with him in the final seconds of the series.<\/p>\n In the final episode (adapted from Sally Rooney\u2019s book), we saw Frances adjusting to her endometriosis diagnosis, and apologising to both Melissa \u2013 Nick\u2019s wife \u2013 and to Bobbi, her best friend and former lover who was the unwitting subject of Frances\u2019 essay, published in a prestigious literary magazine.<\/p>\n Frances sent Bobbi a long email apologising for not telling her about the essay, before explaining that she never got over their break-up in school, and that she was still in love with her.<\/p>\n The pair reunited, sleeping together and later becoming a \u201ccommitted\u201d couple (although with the unspoken potential to see other people).<\/p>\n However, in the final scenes of the episode, Nick accidentally called Frances (mistaking her number for his wife\u2019s), and they got talking.<\/p>\n They discussed their break-up, which occurred straight after Frances returned from her doctor\u2019s appointment \u2013 and was hit with a double-blow when she learnt that Nick had begun sleeping with Melissa again.<\/p>\n Over the phone, Frances revealed to Nick her diagnosis (\u201cI wish you had told me,\u201d he said, beginning to cry), and he in turn confessed he still had feelings for her.<\/p>\n \u201cNick?\u201d she said, in the final seconds of the episode. \u201cCome and get me.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, Joe Alwyn \u2013 who plays Nick \u2013 praised the \u201cmessiness\u201d of the finale.<\/p>\n \u201cI hope that the messiness of the whole series and the way that Sally doesn\u2019t tie things up at the end, I hope people respond to it well. But I hope it provokes discussion as well, just like it did for the book,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Sasha Lane \u2013 who plays Bobbi in the series \u2013 teased ahead of the series that she believed viewers\u2019 opinions on Frances and Bobbi\u2019s relationship would \u201cshift\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI think their opinion will change. I think they\u2019ll start off with an opinion in the first couple episodes of how they feel about all these different types of relationships and the messiness of it. And by the end of it, they might be like, \u2018OK, well\u2026\u2019 I think it\u2019ll just shift,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Jemima Kirke, who plays\u00a0Melissa, agreed with her co-star.<\/p>\n \u201cI think that\u2019s true,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that the book might start out with clear rights and wrongs, goods and bads, and then at the end I think what we really find out is how little we know, how few answers we have and how blurry everything is, which is frustrating. I just know that from reading the book.
