\u201cI did do an episode of Doctor Who<\/a>, so I do feel like I\u2019ve done a little bit [of sci-fi],\u201d series lead Keeley Hawes told RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press.<\/p>\n \u201cBut this just felt so different and unusual, tonally, and so grounded in reality. It feels like something that could be possible, rather than sci-fi that is, you know, about time-travel.\u201d<\/p> While the new version does follow the beats of the original story \u2013 every woman in a small English village falls mysteriously pregnant, giving birth to unusual children who may pose a threat to their parents \u2013 there are also some crucial differences to the story added by The Night Manager screenwriter David Farr.<\/p>\n And more generally, the cast and creatives behind the show hinted that they expected The Midwich Cuckoos to wrongfoot their audience, who might not expect the peculiar mix of tones and styles applied to what could be a straight horror\/thriller story.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019ll be expecting it to feel so epiphanical and beautiful,\u201d director Alice Troughton exclusively told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause it is really kind of emotional. It develops, I think, through stages. It\u2019s mysterious, it\u2019s thrilling, it\u2019s dark, it\u2019s disturbing. And I think [people will] be surprised by the boldness and the beauty of it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not a show that kind of goes, \u2018Rahh!!!\u2019 at the beginning,\u201d added screenwriter\/series creator Farr.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve taken our time, and I\u2019m really proud of that. And I think it\u2019ll creep up on people, suddenly, the emotional and almost existential kind of dread of it.\u201d<\/p>\n It certainly seemed to sneak up on some other members of the cast.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a psychological thriller,\u201d Lara Rossi, who plays Jodie in the series, told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cI hadn\u2019t really done something like that before. Suspenseful tension. I really, really liked the notion of something so innocent \u2013 you know, a child \u2013 the fact that they could be dangerous. There\u2019s something about that that I find really chilling.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I saw that it was David Farr that had written it, when I got the email through, I was like, \u2018Oh! This is going to be really good,\u2019\u201d agreed co-star Aisling Loftus. \u201cAnd it was. The writing\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n And could this strange, horrifying tale of mutant children infiltrating the bodies of various women even be\u2026 relatable? The cast seem to think so.<\/p>\n \u201cIt felt really relatable to me, the moment I read the script, because we were just sort of coming out of a lockdown,\u201d Synn\u00f8ve Karlsen, who plays Hawes\u2019 on-=screen daughter, told us.<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, I remember, I was sitting at home reading it, and I just really related to where Cassie was at, at that point \u2013 sort of quite stagnant, and quite isolated. As I think lots of us were \u2013 or most of us were \u2013 during the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe never could have imagined that this show would be described as relatable,\u201d Hawes laughed.<\/p>\n \u201cBut because of the time that we\u2019ve all been through, it certainly does have parallels with COVID, and the pandemic, and the lockdowns, and the government taking over, and, you know, people being isolated.\u201d<\/p>\n The Midwich Cuckoos will begin airing on Sky Max and NOW from Thursday 2nd June.
