The third novel in Pullman\u2019s trilogy introduces a species of rather bizarre creatures known as Mulefa \u2013 who play a crucial role in the events of the book \u2013 and speaking at a panel as part of the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival,<\/strong> the creative team explained why translating them to TV had been no easy feat.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s going alright,\u201d VFX supervisor Russell Dodgson said. \u201cI mean, it\u2019s tricky. If you ever want to get stitched, up, read the description of the Mulefa in the book, and then go, \u2018Cool, let\u2019s have a go!’\u201d<\/p> He continued: \u201cIt\u2019s going well. I mean, everything is about adaptation when you\u2019re doing this, and taking the essence of what something is. If we did exactly what is described in the book, you probably wouldn\u2019t want to watch it. Because it would be too weird.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd there\u2019s a certain grace and elegance about them that we need to try and find. And that\u2019s what we\u2019re currently doing, day in day out until October.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt was a bit of a process working out how they would move,\u201d added costume designer Caroline McCall. \u201cAnd I was somewhat concerned at one point that [there would be] broken limbs.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cFor those who don\u2019t know, they\u2019re like kind of a giant trunked horse animal that has a diamond-shaped skeleton,\u201d Dodgson explained further. \u201cAnd also rolls around on wheels. So there\u2019s no problem with that!<\/p>\n \u201cAt one point, one of our puppeteering team turned up with a Mulefa puppet head on the end of a bike, and went, \u2018What do you reckon?\u2019 And I\u2019d be like, \u2018It\u2019s a cool idea but someone\u2019s gonna die.\u2019 So we didn\u2019t do that.<\/p>\n \u201cBut it\u2019s going fine. It\u2019s a cool challenge, and we\u2019ll disappoint some people and make some other people really happy, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n His Dark Materials returns to BBC One and HBO this autumn.
