Speaking with a Liverpool Echo<\/a> journalist, as was reported by CultBox<\/a>, McGann said the show was in \u201cgood hands\u201d with Ncuti, explaining, \u201cI love it that he\u2019s young because they needed that. Another middle-aged so-and-so, particularly a white male as well, would have been wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n He said: \u201cI had not watched any Sex Education<\/a> until someone made me watch it. I really thought it was good and he looks great.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd it\u2019s another Scottish actor! When he was cast, [Sylvester] McCoy texted me and just said \u2018Scots four, Scousers two!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n McGann also praised incoming showrunner Russell T Davies<\/a>, saying he\u2019s \u201cmade up\u201d that Davies is taking charge of the show once more.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cHe really knows what he\u2019s doing. And there\u2019s genuine love for it, you know, for Doctor Who. The reason that it\u2019s survived and thrived as long as it has is because generally, down the years, people who have genuinely loved it have run it.\u201d<\/p> Asked whether he has any insider knowledge of plans for next year\u2019s 60th anniversary<\/a>, McGann said that while it is \u201cexciting for everyone\u201d, he didn\u2019t have any information \u201cyet\u201d.<\/p>\n He continued: \u201cWe\u2019ll find out much nearer the time, that\u2019s how showbiz works, usually at the very eleventh hour. But it\u2019s my guess that most of us who are still around will probably be asked to get involved in things and that\u2019s how it should be because the fans like it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n McGann joins Sylvester McCoy and Matt Smith<\/a> who have spoken about Gatwa\u2019s casting publicly, and David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker<\/a>, who have sent their well-wishes in private.<\/p>\n Doctor Who is available to stream on\u00a0BBC iPlayer<\/a>.
