Emmerdale star Andy Devine has died at the age of 79.<\/p>\n

The actor, who was best known for playing Shadrach Dingle<\/a> in the ITV soap<\/a>, passed away in January but the sad news of his passing has only just emerged today (30th May 2022).<\/p>\n

Public records confirm he died on 27th January. His cause of death has not been confirmed, reports The Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Devine served in the Royal Navy in the 1960s, before turning his hand to acting.<\/p>\n

He first appeared on Emmerdale in 2000 as Shadrach \u2013 Chas and Cain Dingle\u2019s terrible father \u2013 and appeared on and off on the show for a decade until 2010.<\/p>\n

Devine also played a Draconian Guard in the Doctor Who story Frontier in Space, as well as Bernard in Channel 4\u2019s Queer as Folk.<\/p>\n

He also appeared in an episode of Linda Green, portraying the eponymous lead character\u2019s lecherous boss Syd Jenkins.<\/p>\n

He departed from Emmerdale for good in July 2010 after his character was killed off in an alcohol abuse storyline.<\/p>\n

His character met a watery end as he died of liver failure and ended up in a cold river in Leeds.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did like my ending, because it was underplayed. Usually they just blow you up or something,\u201d he told Manchester Evening News<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad I was killed off, because otherwise I might have one of those days where I\u2019d call my agent saying \u2018get me back on it\u2019. Now, it\u2019s very much curtain down on that.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Devine had no plans to retire following his exit from the soap and went on to treads the boards, starring in 2010\u2019s Manchester Opera House panto of Snow White, as the Queen\u2019s Henchman, alongside ex-Coronation Street star Tina O\u2019Brien.<\/p>\n

Tributes began flooding in on social media following the sad news of Devine\u2019s passing.<\/p>\n

One Twitter user said: \u201cSad news, RIP Andy Devine. Brilliant actor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another tweeted: \u201cRIP Andy Devine.<\/span> Shadrach Dingle was a great character.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/body><\/html>\n
