Stephen McGann has revealed that this year\u2019s Call the Midwife<\/a> Christmas special will feature returning characters from previous seasons of the beloved period drama.<\/p>\n

Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a> at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival<\/strong> in May, the Dr Turner actor wasn\u2019t able to mention any specifics about who might return \u2013 but he did promise that it will be emotional for fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarting with the Christmas special, what I can say is that there is a return of some familiar characters from the past, in a very moving way,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it draws on its own history again, but there\u2019s a lot of joy at Christmas as usual. But there\u2019s also a great story there too, and it\u2019s been really enjoyable to do.\u201d<\/p>

As for what might happen elsewhere in the upcoming 12th season \u2013 which is currently filming<\/a> \u2013 McGann wasn\u2019t able to reveal too much, but he was<\/em> keen to praise the atmosphere on set.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the next series, I think it feels very open after the pandemic,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a good vibe at the moment on set. So I\u2019m really looking forward to the dynamic of the new series \u2013 although we don\u2019t get told a great deal, so we don\u2019t know any big secrets!\u201d<\/p>\n

His co-stars Helen George and Laura Main \u2013 who play Trixie Franklin and Shelagh Turner respectively \u2013 both agreed with his comments, and said the return to some form of normality after the pandemic had been very welcome among the cast.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right, there\u2019s a really nice feeling amongst all the cast \u2013 not that there isn\u2019t every year, but there is particularly [this time],\u201d George said. \u201cThere\u2019s a sort of re-energised lovely warmth to our cast \u2013 there have been no arguments yet!\u201d<\/p>\n

Main added: \u201cBecause we\u2019ve had this where you\u2019re constantly just staying far apart, you know, you\u2019ve always had the mask on. And it was necessary but it was a barrier, wasn\u2019t it? And I think it\u2019s just we\u2019re all just really\u2026 it makes you appreciate everything so much more now. So we\u2019re really appreciating it.\u201d<\/p>
