Michael Owen has defended his daughter Gemma Owen<\/a> from comments on social media \u2013 after some Love Island<\/a> viewers described her as \u201crude\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Daily Mail<\/a>, the former England international footballer explained that it had been tough for him and the rest of his family to read the comments, and said that most of the criticisms he\u2019d seen were wide of the mark.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard because I have three other kids and this is their sister and they are reading this stuff,\u201d he explained, adding that his wife Louise had also struggled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know she\u2019s been used to that sort of thing with me \u2014 I\u2019ve had it all my life; to look at my social media feeds you\u2019d think 70 percent of the world hates me, but it\u2019s different when it\u2019s your daughter,\u201d he continued.<\/p>

And he said that comments about her personality were the hardest to take, describing her as \u201cThe most amazing girl you could meet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s clever and funny and kind,\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019s not two-faced. She\u2019s loyal, a decent person. She\u2019s still our baby. I\u2019m still my parents\u2019 baby and I\u2019m 42! It\u2019s how it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

One criticism that Owen reckons is \u201cfair comment\u201d relates to the 19-year-olds age, but although he described her as \u201cachingly young\u201d he still thinks she\u2019s old enough to handle things well.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has had two years more than I had to get ready for life in the public eye,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2018Also, she\u2019s a mature 19. She\u2019s a bit like me in that regard. I was playing for Liverpool when I was 17, and having to make friends with 23, 24, 25-year-olds. The bottom line is, she\u2019s an adult and I have to trust her to make sensible decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI still wouldn\u2019t say he was buzzing about the fact,\u201d she said. \u201cBut he\u2019s very supportive with whatever I decide to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t have a massive tantrum or anything like that. It was pretty chilled. He sort of trusts me not to do anything and not to embarrass him or anything like that. So I guess he took it quite well.\u201d<\/p>\n
