\u201cI was reading that interview with the Lord of the Rings showrunner<\/a> who said, \u2018I have five seasons planned, I have the last shot of series five planned out\u2019 \u2013 I was like, \u2018How the f**k have you done that?\u2019,\u201d Barton laughed. \u201cI\u2019ve just got some random ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Giri\/Haji writer added that he wasn\u2019t entirely sure how the first season of The Lazarus Project would end when he first began writing, but acknowledged that where the eighth and final episode ends up does leave the door open for more.<\/p> \u201cIt wasn\u2019t until I wrote the last episode that I worked out what the ending was going to be,\u201d he revealed.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI had a vague notion so there was something I could pitch, and I wrote a paragraph on each episode \u2013 that was about as much treatment as there was \u2013 and then started writing the last episode and a lot of the ideas came at that point, quite late in the day, literally up until the last scene and the last shot, which does open it up for another series. But it was certainly not guaranteed that [a second season] would happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The first season sees Tom Burke (Strike) play series antagonist Rebrov, although the character is described as but one of many turncoats who\u2019ve betrayed the Lazarus Project \u2013 so could future outings introduce us to these other ex-agents?<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s something we\u2019d probably explore more if we get further series,\u201d Barton acknowledged. \u201cAnd that idea of what the toll is on these people who do this thing.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s an almost God-like aspect, they have this incredible power \u2013 they live in this world where they can manipulate space and time and they could live without consequences if they want to\u2026 and how does that corrupt them? How does it change the way they view morality? So it\u2019s something I think is interesting and we want to carry on exploring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The origins of the Lazarus Project, including who financed the institute and its ability to rewind time, is also something Barton is keen to explore going forward. \u201cThat\u2019s something that we would like to explore in more detail in future series, if we\u2019re lucky enough to get any.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe intentionally didn\u2019t go too far above Caroline [Quentin]\u2019s character [Wes] and it\u2019s quite shady, but there\u2019s questions of who\u2019s pulling the strings. That\u2019s definitely a big part of what a second series will be, if we get one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Essiedu and co-star Anjli Mohindra \u2013 who plays Archie \u2013 also confirmed to RadioTimes.com<\/a> their desire to return to The Lazarus Project for further adventures.<\/p>\n \u201cWe all had a great time shooting the first series of the show and I think we\u2019ve all done good work, so if there\u2019s a world where we can make it happen, where everyone\u2019s able to do that, I don\u2019t think it\u2019d be hard for us to commit to it,\u201d said Essiedu.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cJoe will always have billions of ideas,\u201d added Mohindra. \u201cSo if we get the chance to do it, I\u2019ll be there.
