As was revealed some months ago, Vanya becomes Viktor in season 3 of The Umbrella Academy<\/a>, tying into to Page\u2019s own off-screen coming out and fitting neatly within the character\u2019s ongoing on-screen storyline. And in the episodes themselves, Viktor\u2019s story is handled with appropriate sensitivity.<\/p> To begin with, the change isn\u2019t instantaneous. In the first episode of season 3 Page\u2019s character is still referred to as Vanya (including in subtitles), and has the same long hairstyle (give or take) that the character was sporting at the end of season 2 \u2013 makes sense, considering this opening episode begins just a few moments later.<\/p>\n During this episode Alison (Emmy Raver-Lampton) also refers to Page\u2019s character as her \u201csister\u201d \u2013 though this doesn\u2019t last too long. In episode 2, Viktor truly emerges when he spots an in-house hairdresser at the Hotel Obisidian, the Umbrella Academy\u2019s new home, while dialogue from Marin Ireland\u2019s season 2 character Sissy plays in the background.<\/p>\n \u201cYou don\u2019t even notice the box that you\u2019re in until someone comes along and lets you out.\u201d<\/p>\n Getting a shorter haircut, Viktor soon reintroduces himself to his siblings as they bicker over whether to form a peace with their new foes\/replacements The Sparrow Academy. While significant, it\u2019s a brief exchange that is moved past when the siblings focus on the matter at hand.<\/p>\n \u201cWho elected you, Vanya?\u201d Diego (David Caste\u00f1ada) asks.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s, uh, Viktor,\u201d Page\u2019s character replies. When asked who Viktor is, he replies: \u201cI am. It\u2019s who I\u2019ve always been.\u201d<\/p>\n After a long pause from Diego, Klaus (Robert Sheehan) and Five (Aidan Gallagher), Viktor asks if it\u2019s an \u201cissue for anyone,\u201d and his three brothers reply in the negative \u2013 Klaus adding that it\u2019s \u201ccool.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTruly happy for you, Viktor,\u201d Five adds. \u201cBut last time I checked, you don\u2019t speak for this family.\u201d And with that, they\u2019re back to the main plot.<\/p>\n Later, Viktor also shares the news with Alison offs-creen, who berates herself for not picking up on it sooner.<\/p>\n \u201cYou couldn\u2019t have known \u2018cause I didn\u2019t fully,\u201d Viktor assures her, before noting how his time spent with Sissy in season 2 had helped him see who he really was.<\/p>\n \u201cBeing with Sissy\u2026 I don\u2019t know, she\u2026 opened something in me. Showed me I\u2019d never be free hiding from who I really am. And after losing her I realised\u2026 I just can\u2019t live in that box any more. I won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n Looking in a shop window, he adds: \u201cYou know I always hated mirrors. Thought everybody felt so strange in their skin. I guess that\u2019s not true, right?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat do you see now?\u201d Alison asks.<\/p>\n \u201cMe. Just me,\u201d Viktor replies.<\/p>\n Interestingly, this isn\u2019t the last we hear of Vanya. Shortly after this scene, Tom Hopper\u2019s Luther (who has been captured by the Sparrows and missed Viktor\u2019s coming out moment) still refers to him as Vanya, and only learns the truth in episode 3.<\/p>\n \u201cShould we say anything? Make a formal gesture? Welcome him as brothers?\u201d Luther asks Diego.<\/p>\n \u201cGod, no,\u201d Diego says. \u201cJust roll with it man, don\u2019t say anything and don\u2019t be weird.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOK \u2013 but not saying something feels weird, right?\u201d Luther notes \u2013 at which point, Diego correctly deduces that Luther just wants an excuse to throw a lavish party with \u201clittle sandwiches\u201d.<\/p>\n When Viktor appears, Diego tells him that Luther wants to throw him a party so he feels loved. \u201cDo you feel loved?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n \u201cGood, you are. Can we all get back to saving the world now?\u201d<\/p>\n And from that point on, The Umbrella Academy\u2026 pretty much does.
