Were most directors to take a stab at directing a film about the life and career of Elvis<\/a> Presley, you\u2019d imagine they\u2019d stick to a soundtrack consisting mainly of the King\u2019s greatest hits \u2013 perhaps complemented by a few other contemporary tracks from the \u201950s and \u201960s.<\/p>\n

But Baz Luhrmann is not like most directors, and the Australian\u2019s fascination with mixing the classic and the modern \u2013 previously displayed in films such as Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby \u2013 is once again on show in his epic biopic.<\/p>\n

The film does include several of Elvis\u2019 most familiar songs, of course, but alongside them are a handful of remixed versions, covers, and original tracks by modern artists \u2013 with Doja Cat, Eminem, and M\u00e5neskin among those to appear on the soundtrack.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried to be very balanced,\u201d Luhrmann explained to RadioTimes.com<\/a> during an exclusive interview. \u201cI mean all the young Elvis is sung by Austin [Butler]. And I have classics, but it\u2019s done for a purpose.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, the example I quite often use is, if you look at Hound Dog\u2026Hound Dog in its time would have been read for the street languages. So when Doja [Cat] sings it, well she just translated that. So I\u2019m just trying to make sure younger audiences get what it felt like as well as what it was.<\/p>\n

\u201cEminem does that track at the end because it ends with Elvis\u2019s influence on music,\u201d he added. \u201cYou ask Eminem about his point of view about Elvis \u2013 he grew up in the black community [as well].<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd M\u00e5neskin doing If I Can Dream as well, it\u2019s just all of these artists in one way or another understand that Elvis didn\u2019t invent rock and roll, but he was the first teenage kind of idol.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was the first one that was suddenly famous globally overnight, there were no 19-year-olds, there were no teenagers as a commercial force. So they all understand, Elvis has an effect on them. For most young people, he\u2019s just kind of a Halloween costume.\u201d<\/p>\n
