Both films \u2013 1965\u2019s Dr. Who and the Daleks<\/a> and 1966\u2019s Daleks \u2013 Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.<\/a> \u2013 have now been remastered for a new 4K release and were recently screened at the BFI Southbank in London at a sold-out event.<\/p>\n Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, Jill Curzon \u2013 who played Louise, niece to Cushing\u2019s \u201cDr. Who\u201d in the second movie \u2013 suggested that while the lead character featured in the films might not be the Time Lord familiar to fans of the television series, Cushing nonetheless possessed many of the qualities associated with the Doctor.<\/p>\n \u201cWithout question, Peter Cushing\u2026 he was the<\/em> Doctor Who figure to me,\u201d said Curzon. \u201cThe very, very intelligent professor-type\u2026 he was a very serious-minded person, but he was also a wonderful gentleman who you respected because of his knowledge.\u201d<\/span><\/p> Roberta Tovey, who played Cushing\u2019s granddaughter Susan in both films, echoed these sentiments. \u201cHe was like a grandfather [in real-life] \u2013 yeah, he was very sweet.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cOne day \u2013 I think we were in the cell of the Dalek city \u2013 I had a close up and he\u2019s supposed to be talking [off-screen]. I remember Gordon [Flemyng, director] saying to him, \u2018It\u2019s OK, Peter, I\u2019ll do the lines for Roberta,\u2019 but he said, \u2018No, no, I will do it for her.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI thought, somebody like him could easily go back to his dressing room or whatever\u2026 but he said no.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Cushing and Tovey were the only two cast members to appear in both Dalek movies, with their co-stars in the first film \u2013 Roy Castle as Ian and Jennie Linden as Barbara \u2013 being replaced by Bernard Cribbins as Tom and Curzon as Louise in the sequel.<\/p>\n Tovey recalled: \u201cBefore we\u2019d finished the first one, I got a call to say, \u2018Will you go and see Peter?\u2019 \u2013 so I thought, \u2018OK, what\u2019s this about?\u2019 And he said, \u2018Roberta, they\u2019ve asked me to do another one, but I\u2019ve said to them, I will only do it if you do.\u2019 And he said, \u2018Will you?\u2019 and I went, \u2018Oh yes!\u2019 and he said, \u2018Fine, then that\u2019s what we\u2019ll tell them.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThat was so sweet. He was lovely, a real gentleman.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Dr. Who and the Daleks was filmed at Shepperton Studios, England in the spring of 1965, with the shoot taking place across six weeks on a budget of \u00a3180,000. Unusually, according to Tovey, the film was shot entirely in sequence.<\/p>\n \u201cWe shot the first film from start to finish, so the first day on the set was in the sitting room, where he [Cushing] is reading the Eagle, and I\u2019m reading the science book. I do remember that first day, and that Eagle magazine was an actual copy, and the guy [who owned it] was there with his plastic cover for it to go back into, because it was so precious! It\u2019s little things like that you remember.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Tovey, who was 11-years-old when she first played Susan, has also kept a memento from the first movie, almost 60 years on from filming \u2013 a gift from director Gordon Flemyng. \u201cHe said, \u2018Every scene you do in one take, I\u2019ll give you a shilling\u2019 \u2013 well, I thought that was pretty good, because I\u2019d worked quite a lot before!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know whether he\u2019d worked with children a lot, so maybe he thought that this was an incentive. But I thought, \u2018Oh yeah, he\u2019s most probably just saying that.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAnd then on the last day of filming, he called me over to say goodbye.
