Rewind to 1997 and you\u2019ll find a fledgling Channel 5 having just joined \u201cthe big four\u201d on broadcast television, Magnus Magnusson still sat in the Mastermind host\u2019s chair, and the likes of Jonathan Creek, Cold Feet and the Teletubbies just making their debuts (and, in that last case, also rivalling the Spice Girls for the coveted Christmas no. 1 spot in the music charts). A quarter of a century on and the TV landscape is almost unrecognisable \u2013 though <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/midsomer-murders-release-date-cast\/&quot;\">Midsomer Murders<\/a>, another child of \u201997, continues unabated, even if it\u2019s swapped out one DCI Barnaby for another.<b\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"&quot;ltr&quot;\">It was a year that marked the beginning of enormous change for small-screen entertainment with the dawn of what\u2019s since been termed the \u201cgolden age\u201d of television, sparked in the US by the launch of such groundbreaking fare as HBO\u2019s Oz and The Sopranos and furthered on this side of the pond by the bold storytelling of the BBC\u2019s <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/spooks-bbc-iplayer-fat-fryer\/&quot;\">Spooks<\/a> and State of Play, Channel 4\u2019s Queer as Folk and many more.
