Tessa Thompson\u2019s Asgardian warrior-turned-politician Valkyrie has long been touted as Marvel\u2019s first LGBTQ+ superhero, based on subtle hints in her early appearances and the character\u2019s own backstory in the comics.<\/p>\n

And in early teases for the new Marvel adventure Thor: Love and Thunder<\/a>, fans were expecting things to go even further. Now King of Asgard after Thor\u2019s abdication, it was suggested by Thompson herself that the film would see Valkyrie \u201cfind[ing] her queen\u201d \u2013 but there\u2019s not actually any trace of this storyline in the finished version of the film.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, as king, as new king, she needs to find her queen,\u201d Thompson told fans at San Diego Comic-Con when the film was announced in 2019. \u201cSo that will be the first order of business. She has some ideas. I\u2019ll keep you posted.\u201d<\/p>

How Thor: Love and Thunder ignores Valkyrie\u2019s sexuality and love life<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Instead, there are just a couple of short references to Valkyrie\u2019s sexuality in Love and Thunder. One is just a flirtatious moment with one of Zeus\u2019 (Russell Crowe) handmaidens when Valkyrie kisses her hand, and the other comes in a conversation with Korg (Taika Waititi).<\/p>\n

Speculating on Jane (Natalie Portman) and Thor\u2019s (Chris Hemsworth) reconciliation, Korg recalls that Valyrie\u2019s girlfriend \u201cdied in battle,\u201d as suggested in Thor: Ragnarok, along with Valkyrie\u2019s other fellow\u2026well, Valkyries. The remaining Val confirms that she\u2019s kept romance at arm\u2019s length since then, preferring casual assignations.<\/p>\n

This is pretty much all we hear of Valkyrie\u2019s love life, and the thread isn\u2019t picked up again. Oddly, it\u2019s actually Korg who ends up getting a boyfriend instead, getting together with a fellow rock monster called Dwayne in the film\u2019s closing round-up.<\/p>\n

It may be slightly disappointing for fans who\u2019d hoped to see more of Valkyrie looking for her queen, and perhaps there\u2019s a storyline somewhere on the cutting-room floor where we might have seen this storyline explored now. There\u2019s always the next movie (or Disney Plus spin-off) anyway\u2026<\/p>\n
