Last we saw Sky\u2019s brutal but brilliant comedy-drama Breeders<\/a>, Martin Freeman\u2019s Paul had pushed his son Luke (Alex Eastwood) too far, causing the boy to lash out and hit his hot-tempered father. The latest season begins with Paul living apart from his family in the aftermath, while his partner, Daisy Haggard\u2019s Ally, unwittingly neglects their daughter Ava (Eve Prenelle) as she attempts to both keep the peace in the family home and avert a crisis at work.<\/p>\n

Paul and Ally are both well-intentioned but far from perfect and it\u2019s this tricky balance that appeals to the actors who play them. \u201cEven though we\u2019re very different people, I always kind of empathise with Ally,\u201d Haggard tells RadioTimes.com<\/a>. \u201cShe\u2019s really well-written, so even if you don\u2019t agree with her, you can relate to what she\u2019s going through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s what makes the parts playable and hopefully relatable,\u201d agrees her co-star Freeman. \u201cEven if it\u2019s something the audience might not do themselves in that particular moment, I think it\u2019s all motivated. I don\u2019t think they [Paul and Ally] do things which just seemed crazily unbelievable. Whether you would do it yourself or not, I always get why they\u2019re doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Breeders started out life as a dream of Freeman\u2019s \u2013 in the dream, his children were making a terrific amount of noise and though he attempted to rein in his anger, he found himself unable to control his rage and ended up yelling at them. The dream was realised on-screen as the television show\u2019s very first scene.<\/p>

The writers\u2019 room for the series has even been described as akin to a \u201ctherapy group\u201d where the show\u2019s creative team \u2013 which includes The Thick of It\u2019s Chris Addison and Simon Blackwell \u2013\u00a0swap stories of where they feel they misstepped as parents. Freeman says it was \u201calways the hope\u201d that this feeling might extend to the show\u2019s audience, that Breeders \u201cwould be a funny show but that it would also act as something of a comfort for people as well\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vast majority of people have bawled at their kids,\u201d he says. \u201cI think people who haven\u2019t bawled at their kids aren\u2019t with their kids very often. I don\u2019t mean every day, but show me a person who\u2019s not been screamed at by their parents and I\u2019ll show you a unicorn.\u201d<\/p>\n

As it charts Paul and Ally\u2019s parenting challenges, Breeders veers from laugh-out-loud moments to heartbreaking tragedy \u2013 sometimes in a single scene \u2013 and nailing its complex tone was co-creator Freeman\u2019s biggest priority when developing the series. \u201cI\u2019m giving less notes now, because I think this is our strongest series \u2013 but most of my notes [early on] would be tonal notes, actually, just about what world we\u2019re in. I think we\u2019re getting ever closer to it now, to the show that I hoped that we hoped we would be making.<\/p>\n

Haggard \u2013 who also stars in and co-writes BBC Three\u2019s dark comedy Back to Life<\/a> \u2013 says both she and Freeman are \u201cquite instinctive\u201d when it comes to navigating those tonal shifts. \u201cI think it\u2019s probably quite natural to both us to switch between something funny and something touching and dramatic. Because that\u2019s what life is, isn\u2019t it? Often if a scene is difficult to play, it\u2019s because something doesn\u2019t make sense \u2013 but because Breeders is so well written, it\u2019s usually quite clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freeman\u2019s scenes with Alun Armstrong and Joanna Bacon \u2013 cast as Paul\u2019s eccentric parents Jim and Jackie \u2013 are the show\u2019s most unabashedly comedic, often helping to break the tension present elsewhere in the series.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a very different atmosphere [during filming], because those scenes, for the most part, serve a different function,\u201d Freeman says. \u201cThey are a bit more, you know, the pressure cooker sort of being released.\u201d<\/p>\n

The latest season of Breeders will challenge even this status quo, however.\u00a0\u201cAs the series goes on, Jim and Jackie particularly get more serious \u2013 they get more of a run at showing different colours on their palette, not just the comedy sidekick sort of thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a strand of story that is beautifully done \u2013 from the writing department and the acting department and the directing department \u2013 involving Jim and Jackie, which is just\u2026 yeah, it\u2019s great. And it gives them [Armstrong and Bacon] a chance to spread their wings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul and Ally\u2019s on-screen offspring are also being challenged with increasingly demanding storylines \u2013 Luke and Ava were recast and aged-up considerably between the show\u2019s first and second seasons and while this twist wasn\u2019t replicated for season 3, the returning Eastwood and Prenelle have evolved and grown as performers, Freeman and Haggard say.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were brilliant last series, but they are just a year more competent and experienced\u2026 they\u2019re just brilliant to work with, just really good actors,\u201d she says. \u201cWe have to look after them a bit less now,\u201d he agrees. \u201cThey are a bit more their own people \u2013 obviously, they are still much younger but I think they\u2019ve hit their stride a little bit more, and they\u2019re really trusted by the writers. They handle some quite complex, emotional stuff\u2026 and they do it remarkably well.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the new season begins,\u00a0Freeman\u2019s character is struggling in a number of ways with his self-imposed exile from his family, a decision he made at the end of the previous run to give Luke space. \u201cHe genuinely misses his family, and he would love to get back there,\u201d Freeman explains. \u201cBut he\u2019s also alone in a lovely house, having whiskey with his feet up. And both those things can exist at the same time. That\u2019s definitely the case with Paul as we find him in series 3.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a conflict that\u2019s central to the series \u2013 loving your kids more than anything whilst also yearning for the days before parental responsibility. \u201cI would die for those kids,\u201d Paul tells Ally in the show\u2019s first episode. \u201cBut often, I also want to kill them.\u201d As Freeman suggests, \u201cWe can hold more than one thing in our head at once.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Haggard and Freeman have busy schedules beyond Breeders. Right now, she is weighing up a potential third season of the acclaimed Back to Life<\/a>. \u201cI was very adamant that I didn\u2019t want to just accept or start doing season 3 before I knew exactly what it would be,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd if there wasn\u2019t something that came to mind, or it couldn\u2019t be better than the first two years, then I didn\u2019t want to do it. So yeah, that\u2019s not happened yet. You want to make sure that each new story you generate is absolutely going to be strong and good and interesting. So until I had that competently in my head, I didn\u2019t want to pretend I had it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freeman, meanwhile, will be back on our screens shortly as Everett Ross<\/a> \u2013 a role he previously played in 2016 film Captain America: Civil War and 2018\u2019s Oscar-winning Black Panther \u2013 in the mini-series Marvel\u2019s Secret Invasion<\/a>. His involvement was revealed by Samuel L Jackson \u2013 the MCU\u2019s Nick Fury \u2013 earlier this year, though Freeman himself hasn\u2019t addressed it till now.<\/p>\n
