But there\u2019s one glaring issue that has been present throughout the new episodes \u2013 the disappointing arc afforded to Dominique McElligott\u2019s Queen Maeve. After a powerful storyline in season 2 which led to a fantastic showdown with Nazi supremacist Stormfront (Aya Cash) and Homelander (Antony Starr), Maeve has disappointingly been relegated to the background for the majority of the third instalment of the show.<\/p>\n
But how has this happened, and why?<\/p>

While Starlight (Erin Moriarty) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) are both afforded empowering and heartwarming season 3 arcs \u2013 with the latter particularly shining this year \u2013 Maeve is just used as a means to propel the story forward. At best, she acts as the muscle, seemingly saved to go toe-to-toe with Homelander in the season finale.<\/p>\n
Where\u2019s \u2018Brave Maeve\u2019 gone?<\/strong><\/h2>\nIn the previous season, showrunner Eric Kripke sensitively explored the fallout of Maeve being cruelly outed by Homelander live on a talk show, and how this helped drive Maeve to overcome her fear and bring the out-of-control Supe down with her strength and wit.<\/p>\n
In this season, I hoped we\u2019d see her being able to live authentically as an LGBTQ+ superhero \u2013\u00a0something which DC and Marvel are only really beginning to explore (though there are more examples on the small screen). Instead, Kripke uses the character to make a statement about the commodification of queerness in certain big corporations in a sequence set at Voughtand \u2013 Vought\u2019s Disneyland-style park.<\/p>\n
But without actually including \u2018Brave Maeve\u2019 in this storyline \u2013 and putting her through the ringer once again in her own arc \u2013\u00a0the pointed satire feels a little flat and disappointing.<\/p>\n
