Martin Freeman has revealed he didn\u2019t originally anticipate his BBC One drama The Responder<\/a>\u00a0becoming a continuing series.<\/p>\n

It was announced back in March that the acclaimed police drama would return for more episodes<\/a>, but Freeman told RadioTimes.com<\/a> that he originally approached the five-part first season as \u201ca standalone thing\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t [see it as a returning series], not necessarily,\u201d he said. \u201cBut a<\/span>s we were doing it, I could see more of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI first read it as a standalone thing, with just five episodes, but I enjoying the doing of it very much and obviously it\u2019s been well-received.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf anything, I\u2019m too much of a fan of things being finite, you know? If it was up to me, we probably wouldn\u2019t finish a single episode of anything \u2013 just three scenes and then stop before it goes bad!\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Written by Tony Schumacher, The Responder followed Chris Carson (Freeman), an urgent response officer operating in Liverpool who ends up caught in a criminal web as he grapples with mental health struggles.<\/p>\n

The series was acclaimed by critics, with RadioTimes.com <\/strong>branding it \u201ca triumph\u201d and \u201ca sophisticated look at modern police work\u201d<\/a> \u2013 Freeman, though, insists he\u2019s wary of being \u201cled by reaction\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be flattered into doing another one where you really shouldn\u2019t do it,\u201d he said. \u201c<\/span>In my experience on a couple of shows, people think they want another one and then you give them another one and they go, \u2018Oh, it was much better [before], you should have just stopped.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou can be damned if you do, damned if you don\u2019t \u2013 but I think as long as you\u2019ve got something to say, then doing another one of anything is fine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
