Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright has revealed that the BBC \u201ccertainly [is] up for\u201d continuing with the show, but would need a new streaming partner after HBO recently cancelled the period drama.<\/p>\n

Last week, HBO announced that it would not be moving forward with Gentleman Jack<\/a> \u2013 which is a co-production between the American channel and the BBC \u2013 while the BBC said that it was \u201cin discussions\u201d with Wainwright about \u201cwhat\u2019s next\u201d.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com<\/a>,<\/strong> the writer said that HBO\u2019s decision to cancel Gentleman Jack<\/a>\u00a0was \u201ca surprise\u201d \u2013 however, the BBC is wanting to continue with the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I think we all are [gutted]. It\u2019s been a bit of a surprise really because it\u2019s been doing really well, certainly in this country. We were ready to go again, the BBC certainly [is] up for going again.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cI think if HBO had been up for it, there\u2019d have been no question. It\u2019s been a very successful show in all areas for them \u2013 it\u2019s had fantastic reviews, it\u2019s had a very respectable audience and on top of that it\u2019s had an impact on the community of gay women. We have the most extraordinary fanbase, they organise all sorts of events.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked whether there\u2019s a chance the BBC could continue on with it as a solo production, Wainwright said: \u201cI think [it] wouldn\u2019t want to continue with it without it having the same production values.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we would need to find another partner who would stream it globally. You know, I think all those other options are being explored at the minute given that there is a desire to go on with it amongst quite a lot of people \u2013 the BBC, Lookout Point, myself, you know.\u201d<\/p>

Gentleman Jack stars Suranne Jones as the titular Anne Lister, a real-life landowner who lived in 1830s Yorkshire and kept a diary which documented her various lesbian relationships.<\/p>\n

Rosie Cavaliero, who plays Elizabeth Cordingley, told RadioTimes.com<\/strong> at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards in an exclusive interview that she was \u201creally surprised\u201d<\/a> by HBO\u2019s decision to cancel, adding that it was \u201cthe last thing [she] thought would happen\u201d.<\/p>\n
