Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a><\/strong> in an exclusive interview, the creator and writer revealed she was surprised by HBO\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n \u201cI mean, you never know if you\u2019re going to get recommissioned but we were kind of quietly optimistic that it would happen,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you have a show that doesn\u2019t do well, you kind of think: \u2018Well, fair enough,\u2019 but I think what\u2019s bewildering is that it appeared to be doing perfectly well but clearly not the same in America.\u201d<\/p>\n She added that the second season\u2019s broadcast slot on HBO may have contributed to its downfall. \u201cIt was going out at 10 o\u2019clock on Monday nights there. They didn\u2019t push the second series as much. I think, over there, it\u2019s subscription only, the channel it\u2019s on.\u201d<\/p>\n Wainwright continued by saying that another factor in the decision was budget cuts at HBO and that the channel is \u201cnot as interested in period drama\u201d anymore.<\/p>\n \u201cI can\u2019t complain about HBO because our execs at HBO were wonderful. I think they wanted to go again but obviously they\u2019ve been taken over now by Warner Discovery \u2013 the Discovery Channel I think.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019ve been told that they have to cut the budgets and I think they\u2019re not as interested in period drama. They\u2019re certainly not interested in 19th<\/sup> century English lesbians by the sound of things. But our execs who commissioned the show in the first place I think are as kinda gutted as we are.\u201d<\/p>\n Warner Brothers, which is the parent company of HBO, merged with Discovery in April of this year following a multibillion-dollar deal.<\/p>\n As for Gentleman Jack, Wainwright added that the BBC \u201ccertainly [is] up for going again\u201d<\/a> but will need a new streaming partner to replace HBO as it \u201cwouldn\u2019t want to continue without it having the same production values\u201d.<\/p>\n Gentleman Jack seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on\u00a0BBC iPlayer<\/a>.
