Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a><\/strong> and other press at a Q&A ahead of the show\u2019s launch, series star Anjli Mohindra said she looked at real murder cases as part of her research into her character, a female police officer.<\/p>\n She referenced the murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa, who were both killed in 2021.<\/p>\n \u201cI focused in on what it would feel like to be a woman dealing with a case like this \u2013 with the Sarah Everard case and Sabina Nessa\u2026 I mean, we all know how it feels to be a woman in this country or on this planet at the moment with things like that happening.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was nice that we got to play those moments where you see how a woman police officer would react to a crime like that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Executive producer Jake Lushington added that the series \u201cwon\u2019t shy away from the story\u201d, and will set out to \u201chumanise the victim and how she\u2019s talked about\u201d.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cYou can take shortcuts into [the] genre and forget what it\u2019s like for the audience, what the reality of what we\u2019re talking about is, and while we won\u2019t shy away from the story and who it\u2019s about, we\u2019ve had extensive conversations about wanting to humanise the victim and how she\u2019s talked about, but also make sure that the idea of the crime is not something that the audience would take for granted, because it\u2019s \u2018another murder mystery\u2019.<\/p>\n \u201cI think we\u2019ve gone beyond that a little bit. Without getting too preachy, I think the audience is on a slightly different emotional level and I think us in television need to catch up and listen.\u201d<\/p>\n Director James Strong said: \u201cIt\u2019s about being responsible and being aware of what\u2019s the bigger picture \u2013 we shot a version of it and then we went back and went further. It has to be done properly, and acknowledged what\u2019s happening and how many times it\u2019s happening. We can\u2019t get used to it.\u201d<\/p> Lushington added that the series was made \u201ca lot richer\u201d by fleshing out female characters on-screen, including Mohindra\u2019s police officer.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s something that I think has become enhanced from the original novel \u2013 all the female characters have quite interesting voices and interesting POVs. It was a completely male piece to start with.
