The upcoming series is set hundreds of years before the events of the original, and will explore the years leading up to the Targaryen civil war, with key characters including Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D\u2019Arcy) and Prince Daemon (Matt Smith).<\/p>\n
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik says the new production has fewer sex scenes, while the approach to depictions of sexual assault is handled \u201ccarefully, thoughtfully and [we] don\u2019t shy away from it\u201d.<\/p>\n He added: \u201cIf anything, we\u2019re going to shine a light on that aspect. You can\u2019t ignore the violence that was perpetrated on women by men in that time. It shouldn\u2019t be downplayed and it shouldn\u2019t be glorified.\u201d<\/p>\n Game of Thrones previously attracted criticism for its depictions of sexual violence, including the controversial\u00a0rape of long-running character Sansa Stark<\/a>.<\/p>\n In the same Hollywood Reporter article, House of the Dragon cast<\/a> member\u00a0Steve Toussaint praised the show\u2019s diverse casting choices in comparison to Game of Thrones.<\/p>\n Toussaint, who plays the powerful Lord Corlys Velaryon \u2013 a white character in the book \u2013 suffered racist abuse from some social media users after his casting was announced, but stresses that while the series is a fantasy show, \u201cit still has to reflect a world\u201d.<\/p> \u201cI loved Game of Thrones, but my only caveat was, \u2018Where\u2019s everybody else in this world?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cBecause it\u2019s a diverse world Martin has created if you look [beyond Westeros], and I think this show comes closer to that.\u201d<\/p>\n House of the Dragon will launch on Monday 22nd August on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW\u00a0\u2013\u00a0sign up for Sky TV here<\/a>.
