{"id":19272,"date":"2022-07-27T14:33:48","date_gmt":"2022-07-27T12:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1684497"},"modified":"2022-07-27T14:57:11","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T12:57:11","slug":"john-mctiernan-on-35-years-of-predator-we-were-like-14-year-old-boys-turned-loose-in-the-fairytale-shop","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/john-mctiernan-on-35-years-of-predator-we-were-like-14-year-old-boys-turned-loose-in-the-fairytale-shop\/","title":{"rendered":"John McTiernan on 35 years of Predator: \u2018We were like 14-year-old boys, turned loose in the fairytale shop\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Morgan Jeffery\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 27 July 2022 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Thirty-five years ago, Predator landed in cinemas \u2013 its legacy is considerable, with a number of sequels and spin-offs having followed (the latest, the neatly-titled Prey, lands on <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/disneyplus\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Disney Plus<\/a> on 5th August) and the original film now widely considered to be one of the greatest action movies ever made.<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, it was only the second film that then-35-year-old director John McTiernan had ever helmed, following the 1986 horror Nomads. \u201c<span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">It was my first studio feature,\u201d McTiernan tells <a href=\"\/\/RadioTimes.com&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">RadioTimes.com<\/a><\/span><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">I was learning all of that stuff \u2013 you know, the size of the undertaking and the politics of dealing with studios and that sort of thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>McTiernan will revisit Predator as part of the inaugural London Action Festival, taking to the stage for a Q&amp;A following a screening of the movie on Sunday 31st July at London\u2019s Picturehouse Central.<\/p>\n<p>Legend has it that the film\u2019s concept originated as a joke pitch for a new Rocky movie \u2013 having vanquished all Earthly opponents, Sylvester Stallone\u2019s nemesis in the next sequel would have to be an aggressive extraterrestrial. Screenwriting duo Jim and John Thomas took the gag and ran with it, drafting a script \u2013 originally titled Hunter \u2013 that pitched a formidable alien huntsman against a human combat soldier.<\/p>\n<p>For McTiernan, the outrageousness of the film\u2019s premise was part of its appeal \u2013 he once described Predator as \u201cthe movie that the-14 year-old boy wants to see\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">You had a 14-year-old boy making it \u2013 me!\u201d he tells <strong>RadioTimes.com<\/strong>, grinning. \u201cIt was clear that was where the heart of the movie should be.\u201d<\/span><\/p> <p>For the lead role of Dutch, the one man capable of facing down the Predator, producers Joel Silver and Lawrence Gordon approached Arnold Schwarzenegger, still in the early days of his action movie career with 1985\u2019s Commando and 1986\u2019s Raw Deal his most notable credits following breakthrough roles in 1982\u2019s Conan the Barbarian and 1984\u2019s The Terminator.<\/p>\n<p>Schwarzenegger was then surrounded by an eclectic ensemble to play Dutch\u2019s military rescue team, including professional wrestler Jesse Ventura, character actor (and Schwarzenegger\u2019s Commando co-star) Bill Duke and Rocky series veteran Carl Weathers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">\u201cJoel Silver had a wonderful casting director who came up with wild, crazy people like Jesse Ventura \u2013 my contribution was usually the more actor-ish people,\u201d McTiernan recalls. \u201cI wanted Bill Duke because I thought he was a fabulous actor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">\u201cI just tried to set a tone where there was enough good acting going on that Arnold would copy. And he did. Because Arnold has always been hugely competitive. I just tried to set a tone like that and he on his own, out of his own natural sense of competition, just joined in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The casting of Weathers as Dillon \u2013 a CIA operative with a hidden agenda who shares a number of intense, close-quarters scenes with his former friend Dutch \u2013 was in particular designed \u201c<span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">to give Arnold the chance to react to what was thrown to him \u2013 and to try to keep up with Carl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">McTiernan explains: \u201cWhat normally happens when a star is not in a scene and somebody else is shooting, they disappear back in their trailer\u2026 when Carl was working, Arnold was at the edge of the set, watching, which was what I\u2019d hoped for. And it worked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One week before principal photography was scheduled to start,\u00a0McTiernan had the cast travel to Mexico for a week of training with Gary Goldman, a former military officer and technical adviser on the film \u2013 though he insists this was more an exercise in male bonding than anything else. \u201c<span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">Gary got all the guys in something like uniforms and staged hikes so that by the time they started shooting the movie they knew each other to some extent, because they\u2019d spent a week walking in the jungle, getting sweaty and filthy and covered with insects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">\u201cThat was mostly what the military adviser did \u2013 it wasn\u2019t about how to make the thing the more grounded aspects of Predator\u2019s production \u2013 including its portrayal of military combat \u2013 were again\u00a0shaped by the same \u2018teenage boy\u2019 ethos. \u201c<span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">Guns were a giant part of it,\u201d McTiernan recalls. \u201cWe went to the armourer and they showed us all these guns and I started, like a 14-year-old, mixing and matching. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">\u201cWe made up several guns, like Old Painless [the handheld M134 Minigun used by Ventura\u2019s tough-talking soldier Blain Cooper] \u2013 that\u2019s supposed to be mounted on a helicopter, it was never supposed to be carried by a man \u2013 and there was a thing with 40mm grenades and we had them build a giant revolver out of it\u2026 that sort of stuff was all very childish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the peak of the film\u2019s adolescent glee arrives halfway through, in a sequence that sees Schwarzenegger and his squad respond to the death of one of their number by unleashing their formidable arsenal of weapons, flattening a sizeable patch of jungle. The scene lasts a full minute.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">\u201cThere was a studio executive who kept giving me s**t that I wasn\u2019t doing enough shots of the barrels of guns \u2013 he wanted gun pornography, it was terrible,\u201d McTiernan says. \u201cF<\/span><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">inally I got mad and I said, \u2018Alright, I will give you a gun scene that ends all gun scenes. I will give you so much gun pornography that you just don\u2019t need anymore.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">\u201cSo I invented that scene. \u2018Okay, guys, we\u2019re going to spend five minutes where we do nothing except blaze away with stupid guns.\u2019 So you can\u2019t possibly think of a movie that has more guns in it than that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>McTiernan got the last laugh, however, memorably undermining the mindless machismo by having Richard Chaves\u2019s character Poncho inspect the chaos and tell his team that they failed to fell a single opponent. \u201cT<span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">he first thing that happens immediately after is the character comes in and says, \u2018we hit pick off more and more of Dutch\u2019s team until only Schwarzenegger\u2019s character is left standing, building to a climactic showdown between man and beast. It\u2019s not until this point in the movie that the Predator\u2019s face is finally revealed \u2013 an iconic piece of creature design by legendary special make-up effects creator Stan Winston, who was recommended by Schwarzenegger (with whom he\u2019d previously collaborated on The Terminator) after earlier attempts to realise the creature had failed to prove sufficiently scary.<\/p>\n<p>The final product by Winston is still incredibly effective three-and-a-half decades on, with McTiernan a big proponent for the use of practical effects work over computer-generated VFX. \u201cA<span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">s soon as the audience knows that it\u2019s a computer-generated effect, you\u2019re in storybook land. It\u2019s not a movie anymore. It\u2019s no longer real to them. The audience drops out. So while I\u2019ve always used some computer effects, I tried to hide them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He references a sequence in 1995\u2019s Die Hard with a Vengeance, which used digital VFX to enhance a car crash sequence that was shot for real with an additional vehicle inserted to up the peril.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">90 per cent of the picture is real for the audience. But when you start out to make a whole thing that\u2019s completely fantastic, then you wind up with something that\u2019s completely fantastic \u2013 and unbelievable. But it\u2019s dependable for the larger studios and that model of filmmaking where 70% of the investment in the film is marketing. It fits in that model. And it works just fine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After a brutal bout in which he\u2019s physically outmatched, Dutch is \u2013 <strong>spoiler alert<\/strong> \u2013 able to use his wits rather than his brawn to vanquish the Predator. But it\u2019s a bittersweet victory; in the end, he stands alone, his entire team gone.<\/p>\n<p>McTiernan felt this downbeat ending wasn\u2019t quite the right note on which to end such a rollercoaster ride of a movie, kicking off the end credits with a tongue-in-cheek montage which sees the various members of the cast break character to variously salute, wink and smile at the audience.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">\u201cI<\/span><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">t lifted the whole thing at the end of the movie,\u201d McTiernan says. \u201cIt was just a wonderful, old fashioned, theatrical, funny thing to do. We just did it because it was fun.
