Speaking at the premiere of Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon<\/a> \u2013 in which he has a starring role \u2013 Smith said he had exchanged a few WhatsApp messages with the Sex Education<\/a> star and thinks he\u2019s a perfect fit for the role.<\/p> \u201cI think it\u2019s the most sensational bit of casting,\u201d he said, as reported by Variety<\/a>. \u201cWhat an actor \u2013 he\u2019s brilliant in Sex Education.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he\u2019s got something \u2018other\u2019 that that part really needs.\u201d<\/p>\n Smith was a hugely popular Doctor for three seasons between 2010 and 2014 and joins several other former stars of the show in giving Gatwa his backing \u2013 with David Tennant, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker among those to have previously praised the casting.<\/p>\n Smith had earlier offered his congratulations to Gatwa<\/a> when his casting was first made public in May, saying he thought that the actor would be \u201ctruly brilliant\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019s an inspired piece of casting, and along with Russell, who\u2019s such a great leader of that show,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve seen him in Sex Education, there\u2019s a warmth and wit and a real depth to his talent that I think\u2026 honestly, I think it\u2019s an inspired bit of casting and I\u2019m really, really excited for the show.\u201d<\/p>\n Gatwa was announced as the Doctor in May, with the actor saying at the time that there \u201caren\u2019t quite the words to describe how I\u2019m feeling\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThis role and show mean so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care,\u201d he said. \u201cI will endeavour my upmost to do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer<\/a>.
