The epic fantasy saga follows Dream of the Endless, who rules over dreams and nightmares in his otherworldly kingdom, but finds his power sapped away after spending an entire century imprisoned by occultists.<\/p>\n
When he finally breaks free, it is his duty to restore order to a world that has fallen into chaos, as previously depicted in Gaiman\u2019s original The Sandman<\/a> comic book and the recent Audible version<\/a>.<\/p>\n Despite feeling some trepidation over finding Dream\u2019s voice, Sturridge told RadioTimes.com<\/a> that he didn\u2019t consult McAvoy\u2019s interpretation as a reference, choosing instead to base it entirely on the original source material and Gaiman\u2019s advice.<\/p> \u201cIt\u2019s really strange because I love these books so much,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve read them over and over again and you feel so familiar with each character when you\u2019ve done that, but you forget that you\u2019ve never heard them. You really do forget that.\u201d<\/p>\n One source of inspiration was Dream\u2019s speech bubbles in the graphic novels, where his voice is depicted in wavy, at times jagged, black boxes with a lettering style distinct from the other characters \u2013 often switching between lower case and capitals.<\/p>\n \u201cThat does evoke something in me; I can\u2019t necessarily hear the voice, but I can hear the feeling,\u201d continued Sturridge. \u201cAnd then very simply, I asked Neil, \u2018what does he sound like?\u2019.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd he told me that he is the voice inside of your head. He\u2019s the voice that lulls you to sleep and that guides you through your dreams, which means that it has to have an authority and even a danger, but it has to be seductive enough for you to accept the invitation to follow him.\u201d<\/p>\n On the topic of not being swayed by the Audible version, Sturridge\u2019s co-star Vivienne Acheampong \u2013 who plays the Dreaming\u2019s resident librarian Lucienne \u2013 added that \u201cit just all feels very different\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI think that\u2019s why it\u2019s so special and I think that\u2019s why we\u2019re so lucky that we have Neil Gaiman, and that this is another version of something that he\u2019s created,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause we\u2019ve got the comics, we\u2019ve got the Audible \u2013 which I absolutely love \u2013 but at no moment did I even consider that because, for this, we were given such freedom. It was so collaborative.\u201d<\/p>\n The Sandman boasts a star-studded cast that also includes Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who<\/a>), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones<\/a>), Boyd Holbrook (Logan) and Stephen Fry (Heartstopper<\/a>).<\/p>\n The Sandman is available to stream on Netflix from Friday 5th August.
